Obituary

MIDDLETON / BELLEVILLE - Donald Gene Marty, age 85, of Middleton, passed away on Sunday, March 15, 2026, on the same land he was born on, surrounded by loving family. He entered the world in Belleville on August 1, 1940, the son of Walter and Barbara (Klassy) Marty.

Donald graduated from Belleville High School prior to spending four years in the United States Navy. This experience was foundational for him, and he spent his life deeply proud of serving his country. He married the love of his life, Delores Christine “Lory” Meinholz, on April 18, 1963, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Ashton. Don and Lory met at a dance hall in Waunakee, and they danced together for 53 years while raising nine children. Don was a baker and worked at Clasen Bakery in Middleton for 25 years prior to his retirement.

Beyond his devotion to Lory and their family, Don found joy in caring for his land, beautiful flowers and vegetable garden, tending to his orchard and vineyard and making wine. He also loved to socialize. He and Lory spent almost every weekend dancing at the New Glarus Hotel, listening to live music or cruising in their Mustang Convertible. Don was also a member of Madison Convertible Club and the Prairie Home Vintners wine club.

Donald is survived by his children, Tammy (Brian Cate) Carlson, Peter (Ellen) Marty, Duane Marty, Aaron Marty, Lucas (Kelly) Marty, Naomi (Joel) Olayo and Sarah Marty; as well as his son-in-law, Lou Mahoney; daughter-in-law, Kaye Marty; 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Don is further survived by his sister-in-law, Beverly (Ervin) Breunig; and dear family friends, Duane and Eileen Bell, Joe and Diane Buol and Earl and Mary Meinholz. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lory; son, Donnie Marty; daughter, Michele Mahoney; parents, Walter and Barbara Marty; brothers, Delmar Marty, Leon Marty and Earl Marty; and nephew, Lee Breunig.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. PETER’S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 7121 County Highway K, Ashton, at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 24, 2026. A graveside service will follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON WEST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 7435 University Ave., Middleton, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Monday, March 23, 2026, and also at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass on Tuesday.

When I think of Don, I see a man who lived life wide open — pool parties splashing with laughter, brats sizzling on the grill, and the convertible club rolling down the road with the top down and the world wide open in front of us. He worked hard, he partied hard, and he made sure everyone around him felt like part of the family. His hands were always creating something. Wine in the basement. Wood stacked just right. Rocks split perfectly for the fireplace. And outside, his garden — that was its own masterpiece. Flowers, plants, colors everywhere, each one cared for with the same pride and patience he put into everything he touched. You could walk through it and feel his personality in every corner: vibrant, steady, full of life. Friday night fish fries were a ritual, not just a meal. He’d walk in with that grin, ready for a cold one, ready for a laugh, ready for whatever the night brought. And no matter what was going on, he was always there for Eileen and me — steady, loyal, and present in the ways that matter most. We cut wood together, split stones together, shared wine, shared stories, and built a lifetime of memories. He didn’t just show up for the big moments. He showed up for all the moments. That’s who he was. These memories aren’t just stories. They’re the pieces of a man who lived fully, loved deeply, and left a mark on every one of us lucky enough to be part of his circle. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family. May these memories bring comfort, and may they always feel the strength of the love he left behind.

My late husband Jim and I also belonged to the Madison Convertible Club. One of our favorite rides was when Don would host it and it would end at his home with a wonderful potluck. I especially enjoyed his veal bratwursts. Don had such beautiful flowers, but the highlight of the evening was going down to his wine cellar where he keep all of the different wines he made. He always had a joke and sometimes they were very colorful! He will be missed. My deepest sympathies to his entire family, Lynn Budinetz

We met Don and Lory through Compasionate Friends after their son Donny died. We were also friends through the Madison Convertible Club. Enjoyed parties at their lovely home. Especially his wine! Hugs from the Von Behrens.

Uncle Don, larger than life!! I'll miss that laugh and of course his baking and cooking! The only reason i eat mushrooms to this day, is because he made them on a campfire at Fish lake campground and made me try them! Sending you all love and hugs! May the memories that bring tears today, soon turn into memories that bring joy at their thought.
