Obituary
MADISON-Carson E. "Chic" Young, age 93, of Madison, passed away on Tuesday, April 2, 2019, at Columbus Health and Rehab. Chic was born on April 8, 1925, in Detroit, MI, the son of Carson and Vivian (Walker) Young. He married Helena (Ulbrich) Young on May 8, 1948, in Villa Park, Illinois. Helena passed away suddenly in 1996. Chic enlisted as an Aviation Cadet in the U.S. Navy before his 18th birthday and chose to attend the Navy radio school. He passed the FCC First Class Radiotelephone license exam and ultimately helped with experimental submarine periscope detention radar. Chic worked for WKOW and then established and operated Chic Young T.V. as a registered professional engineer, for which he was best known in the Madison area.
Chic was always active in community affairs, national, state and local, and placed an emphasis on electronics, communications and small businesses. He was appointed by Mayor Dyke to lead-off the first meeting of his ad hoc committee on coaxial cable, and later created the Broadband Telecommunications Regulatory Board. He was a charter member of the Madison Community Access Center (public access TV) from 1971-75, represented the City of Madison on FCC’s Cable Technical Advisory Committee (C-TAC), spoke at a Governor’s Cable TV Hearing in Madison, and was part of the first Wisconsin Governor’s Conference on Small Business. He spent many years as a member of the Wisconsin Electronic Service Association, the National Electronic Service Dealers Association, and the Broadband Telecommunications Regulatory Board. Chic served as the WESA president from 1983-85 and as treasurer for six years.
Chic also received his private pilot’s license and followed his interest in photography and the space program. Shortly after, Chic and Helena were married, they moved to Madison and built their home on Merlham Drive where they raised their six children with love and support. Chic is survived by his children, Curt (Joan) Young of Auburndale, Florida, Cheryl (John) Wanek of Texas and Wisconsin, Helayne Kirchoff of Watertown, Wisconsin, Cay (Ken) Chock of St. Paul Minnesota, Carla Young (Denny Derra) of Waterloo, Wisconsin, and Christina (Chris) Lindquist of San Jose, California; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Helena; and brother, Neil Young.
The family would like to say a special thank you to the staff at Columbus Health and Rehab and Rainbow Hospice for all of their compassionate care and support. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

Besides learning about Chick’s life hobbies around radio and TV, his family & friends may not know that he was involved in the redevelopment of the corner in Madison that now houses the Sequoya Branch Library. Every time I go to the library I am reminded of Chick and his idea and ‘engineering savvy’ that made the City rethink access to that site. It was Chick, and his perseverance, that the southbound lane on Midvale has a dedicated left turn lane into that development. It makes me remember him and I hope this note will remind you too of Chick. — former District 11 Alderperson, Jean MacCubbin

I remember Mr And Mrs Young inviting the neighborhood kids to watch Disney's Wonderful World of Color on the neighborhood's first color TV. It was magical! Rest In Peace. Ann Schluter Sarg
