Obituary
MIDDLETON-Franklin E. French, 89, longtime resident of Middleton, passed away peacefully on July 15, 2016. Frank spent much of his childhood in Canada and later moved to
Chicago where he attended college and married Betty Fisher French in 1955. They
had four children—Carl French, Barbara French, Kate French (Pat Cook), and
Sarah French Gomez (Elias Gomez). In addition, he is survived by six
grandchildren and companion Bernice Isaac. Frank enjoyed his career as an
educator. He moved to Madison with his family to direct the Portal Foster
Center for the developmentally disabled and later Pathways of Wisconsin, which
he directed until he retired. He had a keen interest in world events and
politics, and never missed a day of reading The New York Times. His
wonderful sense of humor entertained his family and friends to the very
end. He is dearly missed. A gathering will be held on Saturday, September
17, 2016 from 4-7 pm at GUNDERSON WEST FUNERAL & CREMATION CARE, 7435 University Ave., Middleton. Sharing remembrances at 4:30 pm. Online condolences may be made at

Dear French family,
my name is John LaBreche. My twin brother, Jimmy, attended Portal Foster in the 1960's. He had special needs and he had no where to go. My mother stayed home with him everyday. Your father was a great man and a man with a vision. My brother began attending PF and my mother was given a break each day. My brother loved going to that school and my parents were grateful to your father and his staff. My parents are deceased now and my brother passed away in 1974. I will never forget your father and his work with all the kids. Thank you and sorry for your loss.
