MADISON- Stanley S. Otto, age 63, of Madison, passed away after a long battle of many illnesses on Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2016, at St. Mary's Hospital. He was born on Jan. 30, 1953, in Madison, the son of Stanley and Gladys (Ackley) Otto. He married the love of his life, Kathy Swenson, on May 14, 1977. Although they later divorced, they remained lifelong friends. Stanley grew up in Barneveld and graduated with the Class of 1971. He was a dedicated and devoted police officer with the Capital Police for 30 years. Stanley is survived by his son, Bradley (Tara McCloskey) Otto; daughter, Lisa (Darren Meyer) Otto; grandchildren (who always called him "bumpa"), Dominic, Joseph, Carter John, Skyler, and Karim; mother, Gladys Otto; sisters, Darlene (Gary "Frenchy") Cloutier, Nancy (Jim) Knuteson, and Janis Stephans; and nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by his father and his brother, Karl Otto. Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Dr., Madison, at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 26, 2016. Burial will be held at Highland Memory Gardens in Cottage Grove. Stan was a great police office and a great role model. He always had a caring heart and would help anyone. He always knew how to find trouble to break up. You will be missed

I worked with Stan at the Capitol Police from 1989 until his retirement in 2006. His bizarre sense of humor was in equal measures entertaining and irritating. To this day I tell all the rookies at the Police Department Stan Otto stories (of which there are many). Most of them think Stan is a legendary mythical figure (like Paul Bunyan) and they don't believe me when I tell them, "No, he was a real guy and this all really happened . . . " -- Jeff Loud
