Getter, Mary C.
MADISON-Mary C. Getter, age 76, passed away on Friday, Jan. 29, 2016, at Trinity Community Living in Madison, Wis., after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. Mary was born on Jan. 6, 1940, near Colfax, Wis., to Martin and Helen Froiland. She attended Westby and Viroqua schools, graduating from high school in 1957. Following high school, she moved to Madison where she began work as a secretary. On Nov. 29, 1958, she married her high school sweetheart, Donald Getter. Three daughters, Kathi, Linda and Lisa were born in the next five years. Mary worked in a variety of office positions over the years and retired after working as a buyer for Certco, Inc. She and Don spent their retirement years (they "retired" in their early 50's) cleaning offices and homes part-time, golfing, sailing and traveling. They spent many of their winters in Lake Havasu City, Ariz. Mary was creative and loved to sew clothes for her young daughters, learn new crafts and decorate her home. She and Don spent many hours together over the years remodeling their homes and helping others to do the same. Mary is survived by her siblings, Elsie (David) Krohn of Sandy, Utah, and Tom Froiland of Tucumcari, N.M. She is also survived by her daughters, Kathi (Dennis) Seman of Cottage Grove, Wis., Linda Hammes, and Lisa Zimmerman, both of Madison, Wis.; grandchildren, Jenna, Brian and Jason Zimmerman, Kyle and Derek Hammes, and Gayle and Christie Seman; and great-grandchild, Lilie Latona-Hammes. Mary was preceded in death by her beloved "sweetie pie", Don, in 2011. A memorial service for Mary will be held at WESTWOOD CHRISTIAN CHURCH, 5210 Odana Rd., Madison, at 2 p.m., on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016. Friends may also visit the church from 12 p.m. until the time of the service on Saturday. Burial will be in Viroqua, Wis., in the spring or summer. Special thanks to the caring staff at Brookdale Senior Living in Sun Prairie, where Mary spent most of the last five years of her life, and also to Heartland Hospice for their care and support. Mary was a kind mentor and coach when I was just starting out in the working world as a young single parent at TDS many years ago. She was kind, patient and friendly as she trained me to share duties with her in the data tape processing functions then new on the office scene. She and Don invited me and others to the house to socialize outside office hours. Years later I thought of Mary and her kindness when I was frustrated on other jobs. She really was a special person.

Mary and Don were helpful and supportive to my daughter and me during a difficult time. They helped us at home, which enabled me to work without worrying that the place was going to fall down around our ears. I remember when you two used a rake to get all of the Easter grass from my daughter's Easter basket off of the living room floor. Your reliability, kindness, and sense of humor were greatly appreciated. Go well, Mary. Heaven has another angel.
