Marie Ruste Jerred

MONONA- Marie Jerred, age 88, peacefully passed away on Friday, Jan. 22, 2016. Marie was born on Nov. 6, 1927, to Anton and Marie (Strandness) Ruste, and grew up in Mt. Horeb. She was in elementary school when her father passed away, and was a freshman in high school when her mother passed away. She then went to live with her uncle and aunt, Rev. Hector and Ann Gunderson, and cousins, Helen, Finn, Kristine and Valla, who were all very dear to her. Marie graduated from Mt. Horeb High School in 1945 as valedictorian and then continued her family's tradition by attending St. Olaf College, earning a degree in Biology. She met Robert Jerred the summer of her junior year and they were married shortly after she graduated, on Sept. 3, 1949. Marie worked at the Jackson Clinic in Madison for 6 years until they started a family. Marie was a devoted mother and, later, grandmother. Both Marie and Bob encouraged their kids to do their best in school and activities. She was a wonderful mom to her kids growing up in Monona, especially preparing great meals and always having cookies in the cookie jar. Marie was proud to be a charter member of Lake Edge Lutheran Church, where her uncle was the first pastor, and was a long time member of the Rhoda Circle. Marie liked to travel with her family and later with her friends. She enjoyed playing bridge and participated in bridge clubs and marathons. She curled at the Madison Curling Club and delivered Meals on Wheels for several years. Marie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert; her older sister, Ann Loree; and her son, Joffre. She is survived by her daughters, Valla (Bill) Roth of Minneapolis, Karen (Tom) Golden of Madison, and son Todd (Tamara Hauck) of Oconomowoc; eight grandchildren, Brian (Joanna) Roth, Craig (Maria) Golden, Nicole Roth, Andrew Golden, Alex Jerred, Nicholas Jerred, Lydia Golden and Nathan Golden; a great-grandson due in March; and nephew, Jeff (Yael Gen) Jerred. Funeral services will be held at LAKE EDGE LUTHERAN CHURCH 4032 Monona Dr., Friday, Jan. 29, 2016 at 11 a.m. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Dr. from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 28, 2016, and from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday at the church.
