David Allan Long

LODI-After a protracted battle with cancer, Master Chief Petty Officer (ESW) David Allan Long, passed away on May 8 in Madison, WI at the age of 65. He leaves behind his wife, Vivian Long; and his sons, Dean, Dan and Darren Long. Dave was born in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin on June 3, 1949 to William and Betsy Long. The Long's then moved to Lodi, WI when Dave was nine years old. Dave participated in various sports in high school that included football and track. He also was an active participant in Boy Scouts and acted as the Assistant Scout Master. Dave joined the United States Navy upon the completion of high school in 1968. He started his career as a machinist mate on the USS Prairie but eventually switched rates to be a hull technician. Other assignments that Dave was on included the USS Dixie, USS Proteus, USS White Plains and the USS Hector where Dave participated in the Vietnam conflict in 1972. Dave's final duty station was COMNAV AIRPAC based out of San Diego, CA in 1985 aboard the USS Ranger CV-61. Dave retired from the United States Navy in August of 1990 after twenty-two years of service. Dave met Vivian in 1980, and had their first son, Dean in 1981 and were married in February 3, 1983. Dave and Vivian had their second son, Dan in December of 1984. After the Navy, Dave and his family moved back to Lodi, WI where he went to work for Traex in Dane, WI over the next 20 years. Dave and Vivian had their third son, Darren in June of 1991. Dave started his love for the sport of trap shooting in Wisconsin. At first, it was a hobby but then it became more. Dave started out with the Amateur Trap Association and from there, Dave started to shoot at the National Trap Association events. Dave was a lifetime member of the NRA for 49 years. He was a member of the Sauk Prairie Trap Club for 20 years, the Merrimac Trap Club for 15 years and the Roxbury Gun Club for 25 years. Dave had a great team that he shot with that included "Doc" and crew, where they won the Wisconsin State 5-Man Team Championship in 2004 and 2005. Dave is survived by his wife Vivian and children Dean (his wife, Kelly and grandsons, William and Brandon), Dan (his wife, Sarah) and Darren, as well as his brothers, Tom and Bob; he is preceded in death by his parents, William and Betsy and his dogs, Gruffy, Teemo and Lucy. Visitation will be held at HAMRE GUNDERSON FUNERAL & CREMATION CARE, 157 S. Main St., Lodi on Monday, May 11 between the hours of 5 to 8 p.m. Friends and family are invited to attend the celebration of his life at the Roxbury Gun Club on August 16.
