Obituary
MADISON-Roger Moon, age 85, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Dec. 31, 2014, at Attic Angels Place in Madison. He will be greatly missed by his two children: David Moon and Betsy (Moon) Wilson; his four grandchildren: Casey Wilson, Madeleine Wilson, Alex Moon and Daniel Moon; son-in-law Craig Wilson and daughter-in-law, Teri Strenski. Roger leaves behind a host of family and friends in Madison, Georgetown, TX and Elmhurst, IL.
Roger was born June 24, 1929 in Wonewoc, WI to Maurice and Fern Moon. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Elsie Reynolds of Kenosha, who passed away in Madison in 1995 and his second wife, Theresa Purcell, who passed away in Georgetown, TX in 2013.
Roger was passionate about his hobbies. A life-long angler, he fished the trout streams of Wisconsin and New Zealand, the lakes of Madison and Texas and mighty rivers from New Mexico to Alaska. He was an award winning modeler who built balsa wood and tissue paper, rubber band powered, airplanes of the 1920’s and ‘30’s that he flew in national aeronautical meets. However, he refused to travel by commercial air, preferring to load up his motorhome with his substantial collection of traditional jazz music and explore the back roads for stunning scenery and local food specialties.
Roger served in U.S. Air Force for four years after graduating with a degree in Education from UW-Platteville in 1951. Professionally, he worked for CNA Insurance in Chicago after graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Graduate School of Business in 1956. He earned the status of Fellow in the Society of Actuaries and helped lead the actuarial department at CUNA Mutual in Madison from 1976 until his retirement in 1992.
Given his love of the water, fishing and a good shore lunch, a Memorial Gathering to honor Rogers’ memory and share some flashbacks will be held at SPRINGERS RESTAURANT, 3097 Sunnyside Street, Stoughton (on Lake Kegonsa) from 12 Noon until 3 PM on Sunday, January 25, 2015, where a shore lunch will be served at 1 PM.

Oh Roger, although I knew him for a just a short time here in Texas, each moment with him around was happy and enthusiastic especially about his passions for jazz and model airplanes and his family. This world is a better place for his being here and I, personally, will carry not only fond memories but also a "to do" list of how to be a parent and friend. I have many fond memories of Uncle Roger. I remember going down in the basement at the Madison house and Uncle Roger showing me all his model airplanes he made. I remember spending many Christmases at Roger and Elsie's house. The last time I saw Roger he came to Wisconsin from Texas with his RV, pulling his car and motorbike. I had the pleasure of joining Roger, Red and Val, and my dad Don for lunch. It reminded me of how much Roger always loved food. My mom Nancy always loved to cook for Roger. There were never leftovers when Roger was there. Even at our lunch Roger wrapped up his pickle and said, "it would be ashamed to waste a good pickle" .Roger had a love for life and a love for people. I am truly blessed to have had Roger as my uncle. My thoughts and prayers are with Betsy, David and the family. OXOX Carol
