MADISON/PARIS, FRANCE-John Philip “Jack” Matthews, age 72, passed away unexpectedly after a brief illness in Paris, France, on Wed., Sept. 3, 2014. He was born on October 17, 1941, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of the late William and Mary (Meditz) Matthews. He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy in the Vietnam War. Jack received his Ph.D. from Northwestern University in Quantitative Analysis. He taught at UW-Madison’s School of Business for 40 years and was Professor Emeritus at the time of his passing. Jack was also an Expert Witness for over 30 years, serving primarily the automotive industry. He loved and excelled at this work and was very highly regarded by his colleagues. He was known for his impeccable wit, generosity, and joie de vivre. Jack enjoyed biking, summers in France, and planning memorable family vacations. Jack is survived by his loving wife Sara Gouvea Matthews; his children, John (Arlene) Matthews, David (Lisa) Matthews, and Tessa (Jonathan) Tsarong-Blomker; five grandchildren, Simon and Kit Matthews, Ella and Evan Matthews and Laila Tsarong-Blomker and his brother Robert (Virginia) Matthews. Funeral Services will be held at GUNDERSON WEST FUNERAL & CREMATION CARE, 7435 University Ave., Middleton at 3 PM on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 1 PM until the time of the service at the funeral home. He was greatly loved by his children and grandchildren and will be deeply missed. I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Jack. I worked at the School of Business, at the same time that he did, & he was a total joy! He always had a smile & a kind word when we spoke. He will be sadly missed. I have very fond memories of Jack & his humorous ways. I pray that he is resting in peace & our paths will cross again someday. My sympathies to the family. Nancy Thompto

I always respected and looked up to Me. Mathews while growing up. He was of kind heart, sharp wit and sound illtelect. I'll never forget his passion for 2 seat roadsters and his love of skiing in France with his two sons. Rest in peace sir!

Jack and I shared about 15 or so cousins. We grew up together for many years, worked , golfed, and shared our ambitions as innocent youth. He was a friend who happened to be my cousin. Although many miles apart and we had gone our own way, we kept in touch throughout the years. As we all know, Jack was hilarious! I've always said that the only enemies Jack may have had, were in the courtroom. I just can't believe you're gone Jack. You were always full of life and making people laugh. My heart goes out to Sarah and your boys and the whole family. You will always be in my prayers, and in my heart. I miss you man! Dick Vlasich

Saboor Zafari and I will always have memories of Jack's wit and wisdom which we encountered on his visits to the Second Story Restaurant. He was more than a customer. He became our friend and it was a delight to see him and talk when he came in. On one of Saboor's visits to Madison after moving to California, his first mission was to find Jack.
