Evans, Evelyn M.
MADISON-Evelyn M. Evans passed away peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009, at Oak Park Place in Madison. Evelyn was born on Oct. 5, 1922, in Chicago, Ill., the eldest child of Sidney and Marguerite (Stuart) Sorenson. She was raised in Chicago, Ill. and Dorchester, Wis. Evelyn graduated from Dorchester High School in 1940, attended State Teachers College in Whitewater for one year, and then St. Joseph's School of Nursing in Marshfield. After graduating from St. Joseph's in 1944, she enlisted in the U. S. Navy, serving as a Naval nurse in Corona, Calif., and at the Veterans Hospital in Milwaukee. After her discharge from active duty in 1948, Evelyn continued to serve in the Naval Reserve. While a nurse at the V. A. Hospital, she met her future husband, Russell H. Evans. They were married in 1950, and Evelyn continued her nursing career at Madison General Hospital until she retired. Evelyn was an active member of Lakeview Moravian Community Church, and especially loved the company and fellowship of the Women's Circle. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia (James) Blair of Monona; grandsons, who were loves of her life, Andrew and Matthew Blair; as well as a special niece and nephew; and other relatives and friends. Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Russell; sister, Marilyn Jensen; and brother-in-law, Alvin Jensen. A memorial service will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009, with the Rev. Staci Marrese-Wheeler presiding. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to HospiceCare Inc. or Lakeview Moravian Community Church. The family wishes to thank the staff at Oak Park Place and Hospice for their compassionate care of Evelyn. Evelyn will be sadly missed by her family, church family, and her special friends.
