Alexandru Frunza

Frunza, Alexandru MADISON-Alexandru Frunza, age 88, of Madison, passed away on Monday, Oct. 26, 2009, at the HospiceCare Center, Fitchburg. He was born on June 8, 1921, in Ulmu, Moldova, the son of Toma and Evdochia (Ursu) Frunza. Alex married Martha Huber on Aug. 27, 1948, in Munich, Germany. He was an architectural engineer and his designs helped establish today\'s Madison skyline. Alex worked for Cashin & Gausewitz Architects, Potter Lawson Inc., Torkelson & Associates, and GTE. During World War II, Alex made a promise to God that if he survived the war, he would use his talents to design a church. Keeping his promise, he designed and supervised the reconstruction of The Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Madison, where he was a faithful member. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Martha; daughters, Sylvia (Michael) Oberle and Stella Frunza (David) Patten M.D.; grandchildren, Andrew (Caitlin), Kathleen, and James Patten; and a brother, Grisa Frunza of Moldova. Alex was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters; and four brothers. Funeral services will be held at THE ASSUMPTION GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH, 11 N. Seventh St., Madison, at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 30, 2009, with Father Michael Vanderhoef presiding. Burial will be at Cottage Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m., with a prayer service at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009.
