Larry Smail

MADISON-Larry Smail, age 60, died on Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2009, after a valiant fight against melonoma/cancer. He was born on March 8, 1949, to Clinton and Dorothy Smail. Larry graduated from LaFollette High School in 1967. He was baptized and confirmed at Lake Edge United Church of Christ. Larry was a skilled carpenter, many skills that he learned from his father. He was very proud of the stained glass windows that he designed and installed for the HospiceCare Center in Fitchburg. Like his father, Larry enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and a good round of golf. He is survived by five children, Jim Smail of McFarland, Lori (Jesse) Ewoldt of Dane, Shannon Smail of Dane, Clint Smail of Lodi, and Drew Smail of Portage; a granddaughter, Stella Ewoldt of Dane; a grandson due in November; sisters, Darlene Woldt of Madison, and Cheryl (Chuck) Wolfgram of Waterloo; brother, Gary (Lynne) Smail of Boulder Junction; mother, Dorothy Smail of Madison; his close friend, Karen Burg; and many other dear friends. Larry was preceded in death by his father, Clinton Smail; a nephew, Derek Walsvick; brother-in-law, Duane Woldt; his grandparents; and several close friends. A memorial gathering for family and friends will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m., on Monday, Oct. 12, 2009, with the Rev. Lisa Schoenwetter presiding. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family or HospiceCare Center, Fitchburg.
