Jarl Sorman

Jarl"Jerry" Sorman, age 86, passed away on Sept. 22, 2009, in Verona. Jerry moved from Boise, Idaho, to Wisconsin in March to be close to his daughter and her family. Jerry was born Jan. 5, 1923, in New York City to Nils and Estelle (Ross) Sorman. In World War II, Jerry enlisted in the Army Air Forces where he served in the American Theater and achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant, with specialty as a gunnery instructor. Jerry married Doris Hickman on June 26, 1948, in Boise, Idaho. In 1953, they delighted in the birth of their daughter, Kristin Iris. During the 1950s, Jerry served as the Boise Station Manager for Empire Air Lines and West Coast Airlines. Later, he had a successful career in broadcast sales in Boise, first as Vice-President and Sales Manager for KBOI Radio and then as Account Executive for KBCI Television, retiring in 1987. Jerry was a scratch golfer, won local tournaments and played three times a week until he was 80. His family meant the world to him, and his daughter remembers many hours of playing Annie Oakley to her dad\'s Lofty in the playhouse he built for her. Jerry and Doris spent over 35 joyful years together, and he was greatly saddened by her early passing in 1984. Jerry welcomed his new son-in-law when Kristin married Robert Jeffries in Portland, Oregon. He watched his grandson and namesake, Ethan Jarl, grow into a "fine young man" off to college and life. Jerry was preceded in death by his dearly loved wife, Doris; his parents; his brother, Ross; and his dear sister-in-law, Iris Hoffman. He is survived by his daughter, Kristin (Rob) Jeffries, and beloved grandson, Ethan Jarl, all of Middleton, Wisconsin; his brother-in-law, James Hoffman, of Boise; and other family members. The family wishes to thank Paulette Glunn and the wonderful Caregivers at Willow Point Memory Care in Verona; the amazing Nurses, Social Workers, Chaplain and Staff at HospiceCare-Madison; and Dr. David Sorber at Dean West Clinic, for all their caring support and encouragement in the past months. Interment will be in Dry Creek Cemetery in Idaho, with a remembrance celebration planned for next spring in Boise.
