Amundson, Robert J.
MADISON-Robert J. Amundson, age 83, of Madison, passed away on Monday, Aug. 10, 2009, at St. Mary's Hospital. He was born on Dec. 17, 1925, in Baraboo, the son of Helmer and Leone (Post) Amundson. Robert graduated from Baraboo High School. He enlisted in the U. S. Coast Guard in 1943 and served in the South Pacific during World War II. After the war, Robert attended the University of Wisconsin and graduated from the University of Texas in 1950. He married Jane Morton on June 30, 1951, in Baraboo. Robert taught in Hillsboro for the first several years of his marriage, before relocating to Madison and working for American Family Insurance for more than 30 years, retiring as vice president of Office Administration. He was a dedicated volunteer and a man of many talents. Robert was a firm believer in community service, such as Downtown Madison Inc., Equal Opportunities Commission, Habitat for Humanity, Volunteers in Probation, and was a reading mentor at Glendale Elementary School. He was also an active participant in the East Madison/Monona Optimist Club. Robert enjoyed all sports and all seasons, and spending time with his family in the Northwoods. Above all, Robert\'s greatest love was his family. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jane; sons, Peter (Florence), James (Debra), Michael (Louise), and Robert (Debra); daughter, Gail (Dan) Greve; grandchildren, Emilie, Peter, Erika, Ian, Alex, Dan, Jon, Marc, Kristin, Frank, Graham and Lydia; a brother, James; and sisters, Helen "Sue" Ebert and Kathryn "Kay" Prosser.Robert was preceded in death by a brother, Allyn. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. DENNIS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 505 Dempsey Road, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 14, 2009, with Father Lance Schneider presiding. Burial will be at Highland Memory Gardens. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 13, 2009, and at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Habitat for Humanity, P. O. Box 258128, Madison, WI 53725. Bob was loved and adored by his family and set the standard for how to be a husband and father. He will be greatly missed.

Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 13, 2009, and at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. DENNIS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 505 Dempsey Road, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 14, 2009, with Father Lance Schneider presiding.
