Smith, Verna EleanorMADISON - Verna Eleanor Smith, age 85, passed away on Friday, Aug. 7, 2009, at Skaalen Home after a lengthy illness. She was born on Aug. 12, 1923, in Hillsboro, the daughter of Lester and Lena (Brockman) Smith. Verna married Richard Smith on Nov. 21, 1944, in Wonewoc. She worked as a housekeeper for the UW-Madison dormitories for 17 years. Verna was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. Verna is survived by her husband of 64 years, Richard "Dick" Smith; daughter, Rita K. Smith of Arlington; son, Steven R. (Kathy) Smith and their children, Kelly, Cody, Kayla, Kayce and Connor of Madison; son, James L. (Mary) Smith and their children, Scott and Karl of Kansas City; three brothers, Milton Smith of Wonewoc, Lyle Smith of Mauston and Norman Smith of Elroy; two sisters, Ramona Slama of Hillsboro and Violet Carpenter of Milwaukee; sister-in-law, Evelyn (Carson) Mettel of Madison; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents. Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 11 a.m., on Tuesday, Aug.11, 2009, with Chaplain David Brynelson presiding. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park. Verna was a very special woman who will be greatly missed by her husband, children and grandchildren. The family would like to give a special thank you to the staff at Skaalen Home and HospiceCare. Cemetery: Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation: Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
