Obituary

Vaughn, Betty AnnMAPLE BLUFF- Betty Ann Vaughn, age 86, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, July 15, 2009, after a long illness. She was born in Spencer, Iowa on June 20, 1923, the daughter of Clarence and Blanche (Hatfield) Erickson. Betty attended Iowa State University, obtained her bachelor's degree at the University of Iowa and masters degree at UW-Madison. While attending college, she met Charles William Vaughn, they united into marriage on Feb. 4, 1947. Betty and Charles made Madison their home in 1947 and raised two sons. They were members of Christ Presbyterian Church, the Madison Club and Maple Bluff Country Club. Betty enjoyed playing tennis and loved to travel and see the world. She spent her life volunteering and assisting others. She was a Cub Scout den mother when her boys were young. She volunteered for United Way, YWCA, and Attic Angel and served as president of Attic Angel Association. Betty was the first woman alumni representative on the UW-Madison Athletic Board, president of the Alumni Association, co-founder of the WIS Club, president of the Jaycettes, chairman of Civics Club, president of Madison Symphony Orchestra League and a strong supporter of Olbrich, University Foundation, Hospice and many other organizations. Betty will be fondly remembered by all those who's lives she has touched. She will be missed by her two sons, Charles W. Vaughn Jr. of Fairfield, Iowa, and Steven Erickson (Kristine) Vaughn of Stoughton. Betty is also mourned by nephews, Jeff (Julia) Vaughn, Scott Vaughn, Frank (Sandy) Vaughn, and their families. She was preceded in death by husband, Charles on Dec. 27, 1990. A memorial service will be held at CHRIST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 944 East Gorham St., Madison, in late August. Gunderson East Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Details regarding the memorial service will be determined at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to HospiceCare Inc. or to Christ Presbyterian Church. Heartfelt thanks to Ken Schmitt, Betty's longtime friend, and to Arsie Enad of Hearts to Home. Arsie was Betty's much loved and dedicated live-in caregiver for the past four and a half years. Gratitude and thanks to Interim, Pastor Glen Reichelderfer and to the HospiceCare team of Jenny, Joanna, Joanne, Chaplain John, Chaplain Anne and many others who assisted in Betty's care over the years. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to HospiceCare Inc. or to Christ Presbyterian Church. Service: A memorial service will be held at CHRIST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 944 East Gorham St., Madison, in late August.
