Gustave Kast

Kast, Gustave August\r\n MADISON-Gustave August Kast, age 99, died on Tuesday, July 28, 2009, surrounded by his family. He was born on April 5, 1910, in Unterschefflenz, Germany, to Karl and Lisette (Hartmann) Kast. At age 20, Gus followed his uncles and a brother, Otto, to the United States where he became a citizen. During World War II, he served in the 5th Army Air Corps in the Philippines and New Guinea. While on leave in Brisbane, Australia, Gus met his sweetheart, May. They married on May 3, 1943, at Immaculate Mary Church in Brisbane. After the war ended, they settled into the home Gus built outside of Madison where they raised their family. Gus is survived by his wife, May; children, Elizabeth, Philip (Karen), Christine (Jerome) Schleicher, Dennis (Jeanie), Steven, Jeffrey (Paula), and James; daughter-in-law, Jenny; 19 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Robert; his parents; and six siblings. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. BERNARD CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2450 Atwood Ave., Madison, at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009, with Monsignor Michael Hippee presiding. Entombment will be at Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. on Friday, July 31, 2009, and also from 9 a.m. until the time of the Mass on Saturday. A special thank you to the staff at HospiceCare, V. A. Hospital in Madison, and Harmony Assisted Living for the care they gave Gus.
