Obituary

Brewer, Dorothy J.MONONA-Dorothy J. Brewer, of Monona, passed away on Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at her home. She was born on June 26, 1923 in Beloit, Wisconsin, the daughter of Clarence Cox and Genevieve Ryan Cox. Dorothy graduated from Beloit High School in 1940, and received her degrees in psychology and economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1944, where she graduated magna cum laude as a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She was a member of Anderson House during her college years and throughout her professional career was a member of Zonta, a professional women's organization. Dorothy was the personnel director of Residence Halls at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she worked for 37 years, and was known for her tact, graciousness, hard work, and discipline. After early retirement, she spent several years traveling, working in her garden, and raising her beloved grandchildren. Dorothy had a variety of interests that included baseball, bridge, reading, making raspberry jam and applesauce, weather, politics, as well as her favorite, gardening. The beauty of her flower gardens was frequently acknowledged by her neighbors and friends. Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Kathy Brewer of Oregon; a son-in-law, Steven Stoll of Coon Rapids, Minn.; two grandchildren, Bridget and Jamie Horan of Oregon; and a nephew Charles (Judy) Neubecker of South Carolina. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Virginia Morley; and her much loved daughter, Janet L. Brewer. A memorial service will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, on Thursday, July 23, 2009 at 6 p.m. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Thursday from 4:30 p.m. until the time of the service. Contributions in her memory may be made to The Nature Conservancy, Second Harvest, Southwest Indian Foundation, or the charity of your choice. Special thanks to Dr. Sandra Kamnetz, Hospice and Bright Star, as well as LaToya, Kim, Amber, Karen Eley, and Ganna for helping Dorothy stay at home near her garden. "We miss you Bado and love you."
