MIDDLETON-On Sunday, April 5, 2009 cancer took the life of Husband, Father, and Friend, William Ernest "Mac" McTague, Jr. He was born in Gardner, Mass. on September 30, 1946, the son of Bill and Ellen (Bouzan) McTague, little brother to Mary Ellen McTague. He first took the stage in high school in a barber shop quartet called the "Montereys." After graduation in 1964, from St. Patrick Central High School in Bradley, IL., he moved to a bigger stage at Boston College. He performed in theatre and discovered what was to be his life-long passion, broadcasting. While at BC he served as program director for the campus radio station. In 1972, he took his show on the road as morning DJ and Account Executive in the afternoon. During 1972-73 he moved to Rockford, IL., and was heard as "Mac Radio Free Rockford" at night and sales during the day. Rockford is where he met Jill and six months later on September 6, 1974 they became Mr. And Mrs. Wm. McTague. In 1975, he moved to Madison and worked at WISM. He settled there for five years. Mac opened the "Ad Store" where he was not only sales but producer and director and enjoyed working with TV. He now put down roots in Madison, his family was growing up and he took on titles as coach, spectator and mentor. His sales career continued as sales manager at Q-106 and WHIT Radio in 1983. In 1984 he went to work at Wisconsin Independent Businessmen as operations manager. He then went back to broadcasting in 2000, where he found his new family and friends at Clear Channel, working there until his illness struck. He was a man with great stories and loved life. Mac was a great person, who would give you whatever was necessary to get through anything. Having Mac and Jill as my friends has been a joy, always. I will miss him and his ability to make you laugh whenever you were around him.

When I started in Sales at WISM back in early 1978, Mac was the first person to introduce himself to me. He asked me what goals did I have? I said 'to be top biller within 1 year.' Mac said 'you're looking at 'um young fella. And there's 2 or 3 others you'll have to climb over. I wish you luck, and if you need any help, just ask.' He loved to share sales stories.

We will miss Mac so much. What a wonderful and fun man he was to be around. There are so many great memories of being with him and Jill at their house for parties and gatherings and so many times at Points West. I'm sure wherever Mac is now, there is one hell of a party going on!

Mac, you were the best office partner a person could ever have. You and Bob A. kept me in stitches for most of the 5 years I was at 'The WIZ'; you were a great guy and friend, during those tough years of trying to get started in a new career. You even drove my car home for me when I got my foot caught in the funwheel at the Concourse happy hour one night. As you would say, 'We'll catch ya' on the rebound'; you'll be greatly missed!
