Obituary
Hustad, Gerald O. "Gary" MCFARLAND-Gary Hustad passed away unexpectedly in the loving care of his wife, Patty, in his home on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009. Gary fought a long and courageous battle with extensive diabetes related illnesses. Exceptional medical care, and his amazing determination, willpower, and love of life, allowed Gary to surpass all expectations for survival by many years. Gary adored his wife of 41 years, Patty; his four daughters, Katie (John Szot), Wendy (Matt) Hanewall, Nadia, and Vera; and his five grandchildren, Ellie and Ethan Hanewall, and Owen, Vivian, and Kirsten Szot. He was a kind, loving, and generous man, who was a constant and stable presence and who would do anything for someone in need. He had a unique sense of humor that his grandchildren especially appreciated. Gary was born in Mount Vernon, the youngest child of the late Emma and Melvin Hustad. He grew up in Madison and attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, earning bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees in chemistry and food science. Gary spent his professional life in research and development at Oscar Mayer, beginning as a scientist and later becoming a director in new product and packaging development. Over the course of his 23 year career, he was awarded more then 30 U. S. patents. Although his health problems forced him to leave his job prematurely, Gary had many other interests. He enjoyed woodworking, tinkering with cars, home improvement projects, playing cards with his longtime friends, playing board games, researching investments, going out for breakfast, and an occasional trip to the casino. He was a charter member of Christ the King Parish in McFarland and his faith was an important part of his life. Gary was never one to be slowed by his physical limitations or adversity of any kind. His insurmountable determination and extraordinary work ethic allowed him to accomplish anything he set out to do, often much to the surprise of those around him. He will always be an inspiration to all who knew him. Garys friends and family loved and cherished him, and he will be forever missed. In addition to his immediate family, Gary is survived by his sisters, Darlene (Ed) Zevnik, and Priscilla Hustad; his brothers, Melvin (Darlene) Hustad, and Myron (Connie) Hustad; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Palmer and Gordon Hustad; and his sister, Pearl Hustad. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at CHRIST THE KING CATHOLIC CHURCH, 5306 Main St., McFarland, at noon on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, with Father D. Stephen Smith presiding. Visitation will be held at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the service. Donations in honor of Gary Hustad can be made to CareNet Pregnancy Center/ The Elizabeth House, or Saint Vincent DePaul Food Pantry.
