Alice Berkan

MIDDLETON/MT. HOREB-Alice J. Berkan, age 83, formerly of Middleton, passed away on Sunday, December 14, 2008 at Ingle Living Community of Mt. Horeb. She was born on June 13, 1925, the daughter of Ethel Mae Peck. Alice was united in marriage to Robert L. Berkan on March 2, 1946 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. She worked for Schwab & Schwartz Grocery store and then went to work at the UW Hospital as a housekeeper. She continued to work at the new University Hospital where she worked until her retirement. Alice had a great love for her family and treasured the time spent with her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her children,, Robert Berkan, Jr., of Madison; Bonnie (Ray) Sullivan, of Mt. Horeb and Tom Berkan of Madison; three grandchildren, W. Richard (Laurie) Gordon III , Lance P. (Chris) Gordon and Scott B. (Halle) Gordon; five great-grandchildren, Alex, Randi, Cameron, Ryann and Andrew; a sister, Betty (Art) Redmond; two brothers, Malcolm (Charlotte) MacLeod and Chuck MacLeod and a special family friend, Tom Lavers. Alice was preceded in death by her mother, husband and two brothers. Funeral services will be held at the GUNDERSON WEST FUNERAL HOME, 7435 University Ave., Middleton at 6:00 PM on Wednesday, December 17, 2008, with the Reverend Calvin Steiner presiding. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park, Monona. Family and friends may call on Wednesday from 4:00 PM until the time of the service at the funeral home.
