Photo/Donor Smith, Thomas R. MADISON-Thomas R. Smith, age 66, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2008, at his home. He was born on Feb. 16, 1942, in Madison, to Vernard and Dorothy (Walker) Smith. Tom married Caroline Meyer Fernan on April 23, 1983, in Madison. He worked for the City of Madison Streets Department for 24 years, retiring in 1990. Tom had a great sense of humor, and was always joking around. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandkids, who nicknamed him "Grumpy." Many special times were spent with his dog, Prissy. Tom also enjoyed traveling, taking fun train trips all over the United States and Canada, and working on his clocks and watches. He is survived by his wife, Caroline; four children, Cheryl (Mike) Sullivan of Cottage Grove, Tim Fernan of West Palm Beach, Fla., Julie Fernan of Madison, and Dan Fernan of Niceville, Fla.; grandchildren, Kelly (Hans) Noel, Casey Sullivan, Jesika Kohn, Justin Kohn, and Nikki Fernan; a brother, Ronald (Rena) Smith of Madison; brothers-in-law, Tom (Sharon Hansen) Meyer of Oregon and Don Meyer of Mineral Point; and other family and friends. Tom was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Bob; and mother-in-law, Helen Meyer. Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008, with the Rev. David Byers-Dent presiding. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park. Dear Caroline;
Mother called today to inform us of Tom's passing. We thought and hoped that with the pacemaker, Tom would have many more happy years. It was not to be.
