Obituary
Bauhs, Robert J. MADISON Robert J. Bauhs, age 90, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2008, with his three daughters by his side. He was born in Madison, on April 22,1918, to John and Caroline Bauhs. Bob married Ann Spangler on Aug. 29, 1942, and shared 62 wonderful years with her until her death in 2004. Bob attended St. James School and West High School. As his parents eldest child he helped support the family by delivering newspapers while still in grade school. After attending Madison Area Technical College, he began work as a cost accountant at Gisholt Machine Company. In 1943 he enlisted in the Army after declining a deferment because he felt another worker deserved it more. His unit of the US Army Corps of Engineers was sent to England, France, Belgium, where his younger brother, Dick, a recently arrived infantryman, gave him one of the best surprises of his life by reuniting with him after an 18-month separation. Bob worked for several years as an accountant at Blieds Printers and Stationers, and after that at CUNA Mutual Insurance Society until he retired. In his younger years he excelled in softball and bowling. He was an avid UW sports fan and attended nearly all home football, hockey and basketball games for many years, often with some of his children or grandchildren. He and Ann were founding members of Queen of Peace Parish in Madison, where he served for 50 years as an usher, lector, and extraordinary minister of the Eucharist. He loved to work in his yard and garden, and was especially proud of his many rose bushes. He grew Jobs job tears plants and used the bead-like seeds they produced in some of the 2,440 rosaries he made by hand. He donated over 76 pints of blood to the Red Cross, and when he was no longer able to do that he volunteered there in other ways. But most of all, Bob enjoyed being with his family. He expressed his love in actions as well as words. He was always there when we needed him. Bob is survived by three children, Barbara (Don) Goldsworthy, Kate (Fred) Dike, both of Madison and Jean (Dave) Shaw of Middleton; seven grandchildren, Jessica (Tom) Lerner, Ryan (Tami) Shaw and Matt Shaw, all of Middleton, Laura (Matt) Higgins of Lafayette, Colo., Janie Goldsworthy (fiance, Eric Bohn) of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Joey and Maria Dike of Madison; a brother, Dick Bauhs and sister Alice Fauerbach, both of Madison; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ann; an infant son, James Lee; and his sister, Phyllis Christensen. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at OUR LADY QUEEN OF PEACE, 401 S. Owen Drive, Madison at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 24, 2008, with Monsignor Kenneth J. Fiedler presiding. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Madison. Friends and family may call on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to HospiceCare Inc., 5395 E. Cheryl Pkwy. or Coventry Village of WI Scholarship Foundation, 7707 S. Brookline Dr., Madison, or to a charity of ones choice. The family is deeply grateful and wishes to extend a special thank you to the staffs of Coventry Villages Sebring Assisted Living and HospiceCare for the loving care given to Bob. "Think of yourself as a seed patiently wintering in the earth, waiting to come up a flower in the Gardeners good time, up into the real world, the real waking." - C.S. Lewis
