Schuemann, Helen MADISON/WAUNAKEE Helen Schuemann, age 88, passed away on Thursday, June 12, 2008 at the HospiceCare Center in Fitchburg. Helen was born on July 3, 1919, in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, the daughter of George and Myrtle (McLeod) McCutcheon. In 1939, Helen entered Royal Columbian School of Nursing, graduating as a registered nurse in 1942. She accepted a position with the U.S. Engineering Corp., in Prince Rupert, British Columbia, where the U.S. and Canadian Armies shared a base during World War II. It was here that Helen met Henry Schuemann and they were married in 1945. After moving to Northbrook, Illinois, Helen worked in several hospitals in the area, and then worked for 15 years as the district nurse for the Grove School District in Northbrook, Illinois. Henry and Helen retired to Rogers, Arkansas in 1977, where they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1995. It was here she was involved in organizing a hospice program and continued to volunteer as an R.N. in the program. After Henry died, Helen moved to Madison to be closer to her family where she lived at Coventry Village and the Waunakee Manor. She is survived by three children, Douglas (Susan) Schuemann of Champaign, Ill., Jane (Bernie) Boryc of Madison, and Glenn Schuemann of Grand Rapids, Mich.; six grandchildren, Alissa (Dave) Tyrolt, of Decatur, Ill., Dustin Schuemann of Grand Rapids, Mich., Wade Schuemann of Holland, Mich., Eric Schuemann of Santa Rosa, Calif., Jeffrey (Lauren) Boryc of Winfield, Ill., and Kathryn Boryc (fianc?, Kirk Smock) of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and four great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Henry, Helen was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Robert and Lewis McCutcheon; a sister, Margaret Lewis; and a great-grandson, Charles. A memorial service will be held at the GUNDERSON WEST FUNERAL HOME, 7435 University Ave., Middleton at noon on Monday, June 16, 2008, with the Reverend Katya Ouchakof presiding. The family wishes to express heartfelt thanks to the staff of the Waunakee Manor for the loving care given to Helen, and to the staffs at UW Hospital and HospiceCare, Inc. for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to HospiceCare, Inc., 5395 E. Cheryl Parkway, Madison, WI 53711.

Helen was a wonderful person and mother. We were all lucky to have such fine parents. I remember staying over with Doug many nights in the 50's and Helen cooking and fussing over us. She had a long life and some really good children to care for her in her last years. God Bless
