Obituary

Stapleford, Elizabeth E. MIDDLETON Elizabeth E. Stapleford, age 100, passed away on Sunday, June 15, 2008. She was born on Jan. 28, 1908, in Norfolk, Va., the daughter of Archibald and Nellie (Penn) Young. During World War II, Elizabeth joined the United States Army and rose to the rank of M/Sgt. She was recruited by the Army for her expertise as a telegrapher to work on the Hanford Atomic Project. Elizabeth enjoyed working as an editor, civilian clerical worker for the Navy and Air Force and as a researcher for CUNA. She was a member of the Wm. B. Cairns Victory American Legion Post No. 57, where she was the first woman in the State of Wisconsin to be Adjutant and later Post Vice-Commander. She is survived by her son, George (Karen Anderson) Poster and special friend, Nora Johnson. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, William Young; and sisters, Esther Sundeen and Christine Young. A graveside service with military honors, officiated by Chaplain Jon F. Leider (LTC USAR Ret.) will be held on Thursday, June 19, 2008, at 2 p.m. at SUNSET MEMORY GARDENS, 7302 Mineral Point Road, Madison.
