I first met Jean about 6 years ago - I worked at Marshall Field's and became aquainted with Jean there. She enjoyed having coffee during her trip shopping, and I enjoyed that opportunity to get to know someone from a different generation than my own. It was always the high point of my work there, to get spend an afternoon with Jean and helping her satisfy some holiday shopping needs, catching up on what everyone in her family was up to, hearing about how the stored and shopping had changed, and so on. I left Marshall Field's to start a piano studio, and Jean accepted my invitation to come to my open house to kick off my new venture. I will always cherish the opportunity she gave me - I played a Chopin Nocturne for Jean at my open house and she encouraged me a great deal at a moment in my life when I was uncertain. I regret not having kept in closer contact with Jean because her friendship meant a lot to me. But I know that she had many, many loved ones that she kept close to her. I'm very sad to hear of the loss of such a wonderful person.
