Susan Schneider

Schneider, Susan M. "Sue" WAUNAKEE Susan M. "Sue" Schneider, age 93 of Waunakee, passed away on Tuesday, June 10, 2008, in Madison. She was born on May 22, 1915, at home, in the town of Troy, in rural Sauk county, the daughter of William F. and Marie (Schneider) Scholl. Sues father was a cheese maker. She spent many happy hours there with her collie, Rex, and her pony, Brownie. Because of rheumatoid arthritis, Sues father had to give up the cheese making business in December 1924 and the family moved to Madison. Sue was nine and a half years old. Her parents then bought a lot upon which they built a four bedroom house across from Madison East High School. They moved there in July 1925. Their happiness was short-lived, when in April 1926, their father contracted pneumonia and died. This left Sues mother a widow with five very young children. Life after that was not easy. Being the oldest, Sue was given the responsibility of watching over the younger children, as well as helping with the housework, while her mother took in boarders to help provide for the family. The Depression of the 1930s hit when Sue was in high school, where she took secretarial courses and was elected to the National Honor Society. She was interested in music, and played the piano and cello in the high school orchestra. When Sue graduated, she went to vocational school and took advanced secretarial courses. She then took a job as a legal secretary. Sue was still at this job when she married Stanley C. Schneider on May 23, 1941, in Madison. She quit work in 1946 to stay home as a full-time wife and mother. In December 1957, Stanley was laid off from his job and Sue went back to work as a secretary for the state. In 1967, she took a position with the University of Wisconsin School of Nursing, where she worked as executive secretary to the dean of the school until her retirement in December 1981. Sue was an active member of Lake Edge United Church of Christ for more than 40 years, singing in the choir and doing voluntary secretarial work. She enjoyed her flower gardens and was an avid Green Bay Packers and Badgers football and basketball fan. Sues greatest joy in life was spending time with her children and their spouses, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In recent years, she enjoyed her many new friends at Waunakee Manor Retirement Center. Sue is survived by her son, Stephen C. (Ellen) Schneider; daughter, Sheri (Gary) Gust; grandchildren, Teri (Rob) Haas, Danielle (Chad Seeraty) Gust, Jonathan Schneider, and McKenzie Schneider; great-grandchildren, Cody Haas, Jeffrey Haas, Joshua Haas, and Bradey Schneider; and sister-in-law, Grace Scholl. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley; her parents; brother, Willard Scholl; sister, Wilma Scholl; brother and sister-in-law, Harlan and Virginia Scholl; and sister and brother-in-law, Arlene and George Torgeson. Funeral services will be held at LAKE EDGE UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST, 4200 Buckeye Road, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 18, 2008, with the Rev. Deborah Dean-Ware presiding. Visitation will be at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Lake Edge United Church of Christ. She will be greatly missed by her family and all those who knew her.
