Obituary
Gribbon, Daniel Ray COTTAGE GROVE Daniel "Dan" Ray Gribbon was born May 31, 1949, in Redwood Falls, Minn. to Raymond T. and Sarah Stevenson Gribbon. He died on Saturday, March 15, 2008, at the HospiceCare Center in Fitchburg after a five year battle with Alzheimers disease. Dan grew up in Wheeling, Ill. attending local schools and graduating from the University of Wisconsin in 1974 with a degree in social sciences. Dan started with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Dane County as a volunteer, progressing to case worker, case work supervisor and becoming executive director in 1984. Dan retired after 29 years in 2002. Under Dans leadership, the Couples Program, the Friends of Kids Program and the School Friends Program were established. The agency expanded into Columbia, Marquette and Green counties under Dans leadership as well. Dan also served a term as president of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Wisconsin. One of his proudest accomplishments was to be a big brother match to a 12 year old little brother named Mark Rounds. Mark and Dans match did not end when Mark became 18, but Dan remained close while Mark started a family and eventually became a top executive in his field. Dan loved family, friends, fishing (especially in Canada and Door County), travel and "putzing" in his gardens. He was involved in downtown Rotary Club of Madison for many years. Dan is survived by his loving wife, Julie Mandelert Gribbon; brother, John (Sue) Gribbon; nephew, JT Gribbon; niece, Jennifer (Jack) Bedrosian; nephew, Mitchell Mandelert; and great-nephews, Luke, Jacob and Matthew Bedrosian. He was preceded in death by his parents. A Memorial service will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL Home, 5203 Monona Drive, Monona, at 11:30 a.m., on Wednesday, March 19, 2008. A Time of Sharing will be from 10:30 a.m. until time of service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given to any of the following; Daniel R. Gribbon Achievement Award Fund of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Dane County, Alzheimers Association, or HospiceCare, Inc. Finally, the family wishes to thank Britt Hutchinson, Angela Novoselac and Megan Gerbar for their exceptional in-home care of Dan during his struggles.

I read with great sadness and shock the obituary of Daniel Gribbon. He often said Hi as we walked our dogs past his house. Our dogs often barked at his dogs. He was actually one my supervisors when I had a 4 hour practicum as a social work graduate student at big brothers back in the late 1970's. He was always a friendly face . I would often see him walking in the neighborhood. I know he made a difference in many children's lives over the years. His kindness always brightened our day.

I have learned never to underestimate the healing power we all have. It is always there to be used for the highest good. May you find comfort in the memories that are yours to cherish always, and strength in the companionship of those who share your loss.... Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. (Matthew 5:4) May it be a source of inner strength to know that there's a loving God watching over you, and that, throughout this time of need, He'll stay close by your side. All those sleeping in their graves will wake up and sing for joy. As the sparkling dew refreshes the earth, so the Lord will revive those who have long been dead.'-Isa. 26:19.
