John Vaughan

Vaughan, John L. "Jack" MADISON John L. "Jack" Vaughan, age 76, passed away on Monday, Feb. 11, 2008, at the HospiceCare Center, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on Aug. 29, 1931, in Dodgeville, the son of Wayne L. and Elinor S. (Pedley) Vaughan. Jack graduated from Madison East High School, class of 1949. He was employed at Wisconsin Power and Light Co., Stores Department until the advent of the Korean War. Jack served his country in the United States Air Force from 1950 until 1954, and overseas in England. On Dec. 25, 1950, he married his high school sweetheart, Janet Chapman. Jack worked as a metal lather from 1954 until 1958, when he was selected as an investigator in the former Beverage and Cigarette Tax Division. In 1965, he transferred to the State Board of Health as an investigator in the Cosmetology Division with eventual promotions to chief of cosmetology and then executive secretary of its examining board. In 1978, Jack joined the United States Postal Service and retired in 1993 as a maintenance control technician. He retired from the Verona Volunteer Fire Department after 14 years of service. Jack planned and formed the first EMS district in Dane County in 1976, Fitchrona EMS District. He was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons, a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, Zor Shrines Camel Patrol, and the American Legion. Jack was an emergency medical technician, firefighter and a registered sanitarian. Recently he served on the Board of Directors at the Landing Condominiums, his last residence. Jack enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, and especially the time spent at their summer place, the "Tree Farm," and raising Christmas trees. Jack is survived by his wife of 57 years, Janet; his mother, Elinor Vaughan; three children, Susan (Bernie Blaser) Vaughan, Nancy (Mark) Dempsey and Thomas (Jane) Vaughan; four grandchildren, Andy (Stacy) Dempsey, Heather (Michael) Brown, Paul (Jennifer) Vaughan and Megan Dempsey; three great-grandchildren, Hanna, Nolan and Carter; two sisters, Marilyn (Wayne) Larson and Bonnie (Russ) Burns; and a brother, James (Paula) Vaughan. He was preceded in death by his father. Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, at 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 15, 2008, with Pastor Craig Jarvis presiding. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 11:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Entombment will be at Roselawn Memorial Park.
