Henry, John D. MADISON John Duane Henry, age 84, of Madison, died peacefully and with a smile on his face on Friday, Jan. 4, 2008. John was born on Dec. 10, 1923 in Tomah, to the loving parents of Earl W. and Ella Mae (Jahn) Henry. John grew up on Madisons eastside and graduated with the Class of 1941 from East High School. He enlisted and served honorably in the Army Air Corp. from August 1942 to March 1946. Following basic training he was assigned to the 14th Air Borne Flying Tigers stationed in China. Following his military duty, John joined the Madison police force on June 3, 1946, with the distinction of being the youngest member of the force at that time. John received first place in the meritorious award for exceptional ability, courage, fidelity, and devotion to duty by the Wisconsin Policemens Protective Association. He retired as detective supervisor February 1979. John married Iris Mae Haralson at the home of her parents on Oct. 25, 1947. John was an avid fisherman and hunter. He went every June for over 30 years to Canada fishing for the "Big Northerns". John was preceded in death by his wife, Iris; brothers, LaVern and Glen; and son-in-law, Charles Smith. John is survived by his children, Steven D. (Karen), Nancy J. Smith and Susan Hales; grandchildren, John Henry, Emily Smith, Steven Henry and Christopher Henry, Michael (Lindsay) Hales, Andrew (Lauren) Hales, Emilie (Riley) Johnson, Matthew (Nikki), Mary Kathryn (Tim) Johnson; and great-grandchildren, Crandall Charles Hales. John wishes to express gratitude to his long time companion, Loraine Olstadt. Additionally, the family wishes to thank Dick Hodges, friend and neighbor, for his devotion and care to John over the past decade. Grandson Christopher Henry and nephew Max Henry for their care, love and concern for John. Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Monona, at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, January 8, 2008, with Reverend Mark Bartels presiding. Burial will be in Highland Memory Gardens on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008. at 11:30 a.m. A visitation will be held at the funeral home on Monday, Jan. 7, 2008, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. and on Tuesday from 9 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home.
