Obituary
Onsager, Glenn Gordon WAUNAKEE Glenn Gordon Onsager, age 89, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2007. He was born on Dec. 18, 1917, in Madison, the son of George and Gertie (Jacobson) Onsager. Glenn attended grade schools in Madison and graduated from Madison East High School in mid-year 1936. He then attended UW-Madison, School of Business, earning his degree in 1941. Glenn married Lucille Hoppe on Oct. 18, 1941 and together celebrated their 66th year of marriage this year. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942 and became a weather forecaster for the next three years. After his service to his country he built a home in Monona, living there until 1975. Together they moved to Waunakee, where they lived for the last 32 years. He was employed with George Leonards Main Agency for seven years and then joined the Reitan-Lerdahl Insurance Agency, where he became president. Glenn was very active in civic affairs, having been past president and board member of the Monona Grove School District for 15 years. Since 1953, he was a charter member of the East Madison Optimist Club and also past president. He was a member of the Madison Elks Club, Peace Lutheran Church and American Legion Post No. 360, both of Waunakee. In addition to his wife, Lucy, he is survived by his four daughters, Susan Rood of Waunakee, Nancy (Hank) Rollette of Sun Prairie, Georgia (Gary) Hammersley of Waunakee and Janine (Ken Bischel) Onsager of Oregon; seven grandchildren, Kirsten (Sean) Ziegler of Sun Praire, John (Jennifer) Persike, Christopher (Connie) Persike, both of Lodi, Jaime (James) Radtke of Spring Green, Gordon Hammersley of Virginia, Siri Hammersley of Waunakee and Amanda (Mike) Potts of Belleville; 11 great-grandchildren, Connor, Callie and Ashley Ziegler, Jack and Max Persike, Casey and Riley Persike and Caleb, Isabel, Landon and Noah Radtke; A.F.S. father to Jennifer (Saleem) Hamaty of Miami, Fla.; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Gordon Glenn in 1975; son-in-law, John Peter Rood in 2002; his parents; and siblings, Alfred, Mabel and Ella. Funeral services will be held at PEACE LUTHERAN CHURCH, 701 Century Ave., Waunakee, at 11 a.m., on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2007, with the Rev. Karen Locken presiding. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m., on Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2007. The family wishes to thank the staffs at HospiceCare, UW Clinic and Hospitals and especially Pastor Karen Locken, for their loving care of Glenn.
