Obituary

Newsome, Thomas A. MADISON - Thomas A. Newsome, age 68, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2007, at University Hospital. He was born on July 21, 1939, in Madison, the son of Alfred and Anna (Riphahn) Newsome. Tom graduated from Superior Central High School and continued his education at MATC, where he received his engineering draftsman degree. After graduation, he began employment with Boeing Aircraft in Seatle, Wash. Returning to Wisconsin, Tom met and married Marcella "Marcy" Pulvermacher while living in Milwaukee. The couple resided in Flint, Mich., for many years where he was administrator of the YMCA Physical Plant. After moving to Florida, Marcy and he managed apartments for more than 15 years. Returning to Madison in 1991, they managed Hilldale Towers Apartment Complex prior to Tom joining the UW Physical Plant, retiring in 2003 due to his disability. For the past three years Tom has resided at Skaalen Home in Stoughton. He was a proud member of St. Bernards Catholic Church in Middleton and served as an usher. Together with Marcy, they enjoyed traveling and visiting their many relatives. Tom enjoyed sports and was an avid Packers and Badgers fan. He is survived by two sisters, Mary Ann Connors of Madison, and Shirley (August) Zahn of Medford, Minn./ Green Valley, Ariz.; his brother, Paul (Lorene) Sehr of Dunnelon, Fla.; two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth "Betty" Wiedenfeld of Ithaca, and Marie Linke of Milwaukee; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marcy in 2002; parents; a brother, James Sehr; sister, Dorothy Sehr; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. BERNARDS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 7450 University Ave., Middleton at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 22, 2007, with Monsignor Douglas Dushack presiding. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held at the GUNDERSON WEST FUNERAL HOME, 7435 University Ave., Middleton on Sunday, Oct. 21, 2007, from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m., and also on Monday at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services. Thank you to the staff at the Skaalen Home and UW Hospital, 5th Floor, for their special loving care.

Tom was a wonderful person! Always friendly, warm and down-to-earth. He was concerned about people and always ready and willing to lend a helping hand. I met Tom when I worked in the Botany Department and have never forgotten him!
