Bakken, Phoebe R. COTTAGE GROVE - Phoebe R. Bakken, age 86, passed away on Friday, Oct. 26, 2007. She was born on June 22, 1921, in Cottage Grove, the daughter of George and Laura (Wood) Bulman. She married Cephus Gilderhus in August 1946. He preceded her in death in 1962. She then married Henry Bakken in February 1964. He preceded her in death in 1982. Phoebe worked as an elementary school teacher for over 39 years and spent many of those years in the Monona Grove School system. Phoebe was a life member of Wisconsin Retired Educators Association and the Ladies Auxiliary Military Order of the Purple Heart No. 165. Phoebe also was a member of Ladies Auxillary Legion Post 248 Cottage Grove, as well as a member and contributor to the Cottage Grove Historical Society. Phoebe volunteered her services with R.S.V.P. Phoebe was an active member of Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church, as well as the church circle and Sunday school. She enjoyed traveling, and coffee and conversation with friends. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Jean Bulman of Cottage Grove; nieces and nephew, Kay (Joe) Adamczyk, Mary (Phil) Adler and Lee (Lori) Bulman; other nieces and nephews and relatives; and special friends, Bob and Helen Matson and family. She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; and a brother, Neil. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2007, at 11 a.m. at BRYN MAWR PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 229 North Main Street, Cottage Grove, with the Rev. Dr. John P. Jewell presiding. Burial will be in St. Pauls Lutheran Cemetery, Deerfield. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church. A special thank you to Linda Posner for all the care and support that she provided Phoebe. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the Cottage Grove library fund or to the charity of the donors choice.
