Obituary
Keul, Bernadette M. "Bernie" MADISON - Bernadette M. "Bernie" Keul, age 48, passed away on Friday, Oct. 19, 2007, at HospiceCare. She was born on Oct. 27, 1958, in Fennimore, the daughter of Charles and Dolores (Obrien) Gilberts. Bernie graduated from Madison East High School in 1976 and attended Madison Area Technical College. She was united in marriage to Jonathan Keul on May 3, 1986. From 1977 until 2001, Bernie worked in the bio-statistics administration office for the UW-Madison where she achieved academic staff status. Though she truly enjoyed her work, Bernie wanted to apply her talents in the private sector. She worked with Dr. Paul Carbone at the Frontier Science Technology Research Foundation, where she was the administrator of the Madison office, an assistant to the director and wrote grants for cancer research. Bernie excelled in this field and felt very privileged to have worked with Dr. Paul Carbone, Helen Baldwin, Dr. Dave DeMets, Dr. Marvin and Thelma Zellen. After the death of Dr. Paul Carbone, Bernie was instrumental in organizing the opening of the Paul Carbone Clinical Cancer Center at the UW-Madison Hospital. Of her greatest accomplishments, Bernie was extremely proud of her children, Jared and Morgan. She was always supporting their academic accomplishments and enjoyed watching their growth and development. Bernie is survived by her husband of 21 years, Jonathan "Jon"; son, Jared; daughter, Morgan; her mother, Dolores Gilberts; brother, Brian Gilberts; three nephews, Shawn Gilberts, Jacob Lazarz and Taylor Keul; her in-laws, Ken and Janice Keul; sister-in-law, Jennifer (John Whitman) Keul-Whitman; brother-in-law, Thomas Keul; and numerous loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and special friends. She was preceded in death by her father. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at OUR LADY QUEEN OF PEACE CATHOLIC CHURCH, 401 S. Owen Drive, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2007, with Monsignor Kenneth Fiedler presiding. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 22, 2007, and at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Tuesday. Memorials may be made to the family to further her childrens education. Bernie was a special woman... she was everything to everyone.
