Frederick Haegele

Haegele, Frederick M. "Max" MADISON- Frederick M. "Max" Haegele, age 89, of Williamsburg, Va., formerly of Madison, passed away on Sunday, July 29, 2007, at Sentara Regional Medical Center, Williamsburg, Va. He was born on Dec. 30, 1917, in Riley, the son of Reinhard and Mary Haegele. Frederick married Gladys Schimming on Nov. 3, 1946, in Madison. They were married 62 years. On Aug. 5, 1941, he entered into active service with the U.S. Army. He served in various battles and campaigns, Tunisian, Sicilian, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe. Frederick was wounded in Normandy, France, for which he received a Purple Heart Medal. He also received many other military decorations, a Bronze Star Medal, Good Conduct Ribbon, American Defense Service Ribbon, European-African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with one Silver Battle, six Overseas Service Bars, one Service Stripe, and a Lapel Button. In December 2004, he received a Certificate of Enrollment into the World War II Registry of Remembrances for participation in World War II from the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. Frederick was an operating engineer for 40 years, having worked on the Coliseum, the Seminary, The Earth and Space Center at UW-Madison, Madison General Hospital (Meriter Hospital), and many other projects throughout Madison and surrounding cities. In 1977, he received the Engineer of the Year Award-District B, for outstanding service as a member of Local No. 139 of the International Union of Operating Engineers. In 2001, he received a Lifetime Membership Award in recognition of his 50 years of continuous membership in the Operating Engineers Local Union No. 139. He was secretary of the Madison East Lions International Club from 1971-1976. Frederick also received a certificate of continuous membership for his 60 years of service in the American Legion Post No. 385, Verona, of which he was a lifetime member. He was also a lifetime member of V.F.W. Post No. 8653, Verona. Frederick is survived by his wife, Gladys of Williamsburg, Va.; daughter, Shirley Haegele of Williamsburg, Va.; brother, Eugene Haegele of Verona; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Claudia Haegele and Olga Herfel-Haegele; a brother, Thomas Haegele; brother-in-law, Bill Herfel; and a sister-in-law, Lillian Haegele. Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Dr., at noon, on Monday, Aug. 20, 2007, with the Rev. T. Edmond White presiding, with military rites conducted after the service. Burial will be at Sunset Memory Gardens. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Monday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Legion Post No. 385, Verona or V.F.W.
