Obituary

DeSmidt, John L. "Jack" MADISON - John L. "Jack" DeSmidt, age 83, passed away on Wednesday, May 30, 2007, at the HospiceCare Center, Fitchburg. He was born on Feb. 19, 1924, in Madison, to Hermanes and Lillian (Nelson) DeSmidt. Jack served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a gunner aboard Naval aircraft. He married Marion Ehl. She preceded him in death in 1981. Jack then married Patricia (Krueger) Wilson in 1984. He worked for Dane County Sheriffs Department as a patrol officer in the 1950s and at Rural Insurance for more than 30 years as director of claims, retiring in 1985. Jack was director of the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps for several years. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, woodworking, gardening and spending time at the cabin. Jack especially enjoyed attending his grandkids games and their activities. He is survived by his wife, Patricia; children, David (Debbie) DeSmidt of Mukwonago, Daniel (Debra) DeSmidt of Monona, Donald DeSmidt of Monona, Dennis (Maggie) DeSmidt of West Bend, Craig (Betsy) Wilson of Madison, Guy (Ann) Wilson of Madison, Jay (Kathy) Wilson of Naperville, Ill. and Joy (Stuart) Geenen of Madison; daughters-in-law, Judy Wilson and Peggy DeSmidt; and 21 grandchildren, Benjamin, James, Rachel, Jessica (Tyler), Joshua, Levi, Samuel, Nicole, Brett, Drew, Ross, Casey, Madeleine, Carly, Austin, Kyle, Erin, Shawn, Ava, Clayton and Sophia. In addition to his first wife, Marion, Jack was preceded in death by a stepson, Blaine Wilson; and his brother, Ken. Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 2, 2007, with Chaplain Steve Zwettler presiding. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park. A time of fellowship and food will follow the burial at the Elks Lodge. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested in his name. A special thank you to all of Jacks Hospice caregivers and other special caregivers.
