Slauson, Leon H. > FITCHBURG - Leon H. Slauson of Fitchburg, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 6, 2007, at HospiceCare Center. He was born on Dec. 18, 1922, to Russell and Emily Slauson of Spring Green. Leon graduated from Spring Green High School and attended the University of Wisconsins short courses in agriculture program. Shortly after World War II began, Leon and his brother, Orrin enlisted in the Army Air Corps, as had their brother, Gordon. Leon received training as a bombardier and an officer and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. Leon then served in England, flying 31 missions over Germany. After the war, Leon met and married Helen Hestad, and they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Dec. 28, 2006. Leon worked as a carpenter and was a member of the Carpenters Union No. 314 for 59 years. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1318, the American Legion, the Sons of the American Revolution and the Fitchburg Lions Club. After he retired as a carpenter, Leon began years of volunteering at the Fitchburg Senior Center, Meals on Wheels and local food pantries. He is survived by his loving wife, Helen H. Slauson; sisters, Lucille Boeker, Isabelle Lautzenhiser, Edie Odell and Dorothy Blado; brothers, Theodore Slauson and Ronald Slauson; and numerous nieces and nephews. Leon was preceded in death by two brothers, Gordon and Orrin Slauson. Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2007, with the Rev. Mark Millman presiding. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Don and Marilyn Anderson HospiceCare Center, 5395 E.
