Ida Thorstad

Thorstad, Ida Mae MADISON - Ida Mae Thorstad, age 85, passed away in her sleep on Sunday, Dec. 31, 2006, following a brief illness. She was born on Nov. 15, 1921, in Forest Hills, Md., the daughter of William E. and Martha M. (Butler) Turnbaugh. Ida graduated from Aberdeen High School and Beauty School in Baltimore, Md. She was united in marriage to Elmer Thorstad on Nov. 20, 1943, in Maryland. Ida sold her beauty shop, Lady Ruth, and moved to Madison, after World War II. She worked at and eventually became owner of Scotts Beauty Shop for 30 years until her retirement. Ida was a member of Eastern Star and in 1971 joined Daughters of The Nile and stayed very active until her death. She was also an active member of the Zor Womens Auxiliary since Elmers death. In 1996, she has been a member of Azba. Since selling her home in 2004, she was very busy organizing the other residents and crafts at Park Glen Commons Senior Apartments. Ida is survived by her brother, Herbert (Donna) Turnbaugh; a sister, Eleanor Reynolds; many, many nieces, nephews, great-nieces great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; and her special extended family, Julie, Frank and Alex Shelhamer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer; her parents; and two brothers, Francis and Clarence Turnbaugh. Funeral services will be held at BASHFORD UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 329 North St., Madison, at 11 a.m., on Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2007, with the Rev. Fran Deaner presiding. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, on Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2007, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m., with a Daughters of the Nile service at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to HospiceCare Inc. or Shriners Hospital for children.
