Obituary

Hoff, Luther Virgil MADISON - Luther Virgil Hoff, age 37, died by accident on Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2006. He was born on Oct. 9, 1969, in Madison, to Christopher and Suzy Hoff. As a child, Luther loved to fish and explore the woods for amphibians and reptiles. He and his grandmother, Margaret Hoff, were both great nature lovers and spent many happy days together in Wisconsin, Florida, and North Carolina. When they lived on Sanibel Island in Florida, Luther surprised his parents by lassoing an adolescent alligator and marching it home. Like his father, he loved music and played the guitar, and like his mother, he was an artist and loved making jewelry, especially collecting and polishing opals. Luther studied machining at Madison Area Technical College. He had a great sense of humor, sometimes dark humor, as in naming the little lost raccoon in the picture, "Speed Bump." Luthers more recent years were difficult. Alcohol had long been a powerful antidote to his mercurial moods. Luther felt better with medication to help stabilize the moods, but was unable to remain sober and fulfill his potential. Despite this, he had many friends and was dearly loved by his family who knew his kind and tender heart. Luther is survived by his parents, Christopher of Madison and Suzy of Franklin, N.C.; his aunt, Martha; uncles, Peter and Fred Hoff; stepmother, Dee Lawrence Hoff; and his beloved dog, Roscoe. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Hubert C. and Margaret Hoff, and Carl and Rebecca Hommel. A memorial gathering for family and friends will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, on Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2006, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Any gifts in Luthers name will go to Luke House, 310 S. Ingersoll St., Madison, Wis. 53704. We wish to thank Luthers great-uncle, Dr. Roger Hommel and the Benevolent Specialist Project, vocational placement specialist, Terry Glodowski, and Dr. Harry Kniaz for their many kindnesses. It is only recently I learned of Luther's death. We were close friends at one time, and fell out of touch. He is a part of my life I will never forget, and I feel very sad to hear of his death. He was taken too young. I know he experienced difficulties, and I often felt he was so lost. He was one of the most tender hearted and loving people I have known. May his spirit soar.
