Jack Roland Hathway

MADISON-Jack Roland Hathway, age 81, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 19, 2012. He was born on Dec. 23, 1930, the son of Jack C. and Hazel (Rolfson) Hathway. Jack graduated from the Wisconsin School for the Deaf, as class president, in 1952. The WSD campus was his home after his father’s untimely death in 1942. He attended Gallaudet University and married his high school sweetheart, Ann Marie Harris on June 19, 1954. Jack played football and basketball. Athletics have always played a part in Jack’s life. As a coach, he led the Madison Association of the Deaf teams to many wins. In 1970, the MAD team won the Central Athletic Association of the Deaf tournament and went on to the American Athletic Association of the Deaf tournament in San Francisco, Calif. As a printer, Jack worked for the Littel Printers and Madison Newspapers. He was a member of the International Typographic Union. In the late 1960’s, Jack helped organize the WTCI and also served as president. He converted many old teletype units to TTY’s. Jack was past president of the Madison Association of the Deaf and became chairman of the building committee, as they acquired the current building. He was treasurer for the Wisconsin Association of the Deaf for a time and served on many committees, most importantly as chairman for the 100th anniversary of the WAD. Jack was recognized with the Golden Hand Award from the National Association of the Deaf for his contributions to the deaf community. Governor Tommy Thompson appointed Jack to serve on the state committee for people with disabilities for four years. He also served on the Madison committee for people with disabilities for a number of years. He served as wagon master for the Wisconsin Deaf Campers, during their Labor Day weekend. Along with his wife, Ann Marie, they had never missed a Labor Day camp outing. Jack is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ann Marie; son, Cedric (Jean) Hathway; daughters, Pamela (Dale) Spies, Bonnie (Mark) Johnston, and Jackie (Eric) Hendrickson; 11 grandchildren, Jack (Naomi), Zachary and Ian Hathway, Chris and Anthony Spies, David (Wendy), Chris, Mike Johnston and Laura (Josh) Engstrom, and Danny and Kristen Hendrickson; and eight great-grandchildren, Alaina and Leo Johnston, Kylee and Lexi Engstrom, William, Ben, and Evelynn Johnston, and Ayato Hathway. Memorial services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 24, 2012, with the Rev. John Reinke presiding. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Wisconsin School for the Deaf Foundation, Madison Association of the Deaf, or Our Savior Deaf Lutheran Church.
