Obituary

VERONA – With hearts full of gratitude and sorrow, we announce the passing of David E. Smith, who peacefully departed this world on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, surrounded by family.  After a courageous fight, squamous cell carcinoma took this wise and kind man.  Throughout his battle, it was his gentle strength and steadfastness that defined the man we all deeply loved. He was 73.

Born on June 16, 1953, in Mauston, Wis., David's carefree childhood, faith, and the heroes he admired in his beloved Westerns formed the framework of the values that would guide him throughout his life. Forever dependable, selfless, consistent, generous, and never afraid to stand up for what was right, he will be remembered as a man of integrity and unmatched character.

David went on to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, earning two degrees, first in Construction Management, followed by a shift into the burgeoning, forward-thinking field of Computer Science. Building a successful career as a programmer and later a Business Analyst, he took pride in his work, but titles and accomplishments never told the whole story. What mattered most to him was providing for and being present for his family. He lived that way. Generous with his time, he was there for every child's sports event, fine arts production, art exhibition, milestone, and nightly dinner around the family table.

If David was proud of what he accomplished, nothing made him prouder than his family. For 48 years, he was a devoted husband to his wife, Jane Teasdale. Together, they built a life filled with children, travel, traditions, and ordinary pleasures. He was the cherished father of Erin (Anthony), Laurel and Megan, and later a loving grandfather to his two granddaughters, Lily and Isla Georgeson. To his children, he was far more than the man at the head of the family. He was their go-to guy for advice, their source of laughter, and the steady hand guiding them through life's waves. He taught them to live principled lives, sometimes through advice, but more often simply through the way he lived.

He showed them that gentleness is strength under control.
That kindness toward everyone is paramount.
And perhaps most importantly, that patience is a lifelong practice we all require.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald and Lela Smith; and his siblings, Karen Langer, Karol Dowling and Jerry Smith. His brother, Robert, remains to carry the family forward.

David leaves behind more than memories. He leaves a way of moving through the world: with patience, generosity, constancy, and an unwavering commitment to the people he loved. Those who knew him will carry those lessons forward, along with countless stories, much laughter, and the profound good fortune of having shared life with him.

A memorial service will be held at Asbury United Methodist Church, 6101 University Ave., Madison, at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, November 10, 2026. A private graveside service will follow at Verona Cemetery in Verona.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites those wishing to honor David's life to make a memorial contribution to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.
