Shirley A. Edge

COTTAGE GROVE- Shirley A. Edge, age 93, passed away Monday, November 2, 2026, peacefully at home surrounded by family. She was born on July 26, 1933, in Gary, Ind., the daughter of Stephen and Anna Metz.

Shirley graduated from Portage High School in Portage, Ind. She was united in marriage to Carlos “Sonny” Edge in Porter, Ind., on December 18, 1954.

Shirley devoted 31 1/2 years caring for patients at the VA Hospital in Madison, starting as a nursing assistant and then transitioning to a pharmacy technician and eventually retiring in 1990. Throughout her career, she touched the lives of many through her compassion and commitment to helping others.

Shirley treasured the friendships, laughter, and camaraderie she found as a member of the Red Hatter’s Society. She enjoyed traveling, especially to Las Vegas with family and was a loyal fan of the Chicago Cubs, Green Bay Packers and Da Bears. An avid reader, she also found great pleasure in the simple joy of a good book.

She is survived by her husband, Carlos (Sonny) Edge; children, Carlos (Perry) Edge-Gross, Cindy (Jeff) LaMay, David Edge and Dawn Edge; grandchildren, Branden (Kim) McCready, Shelby (Carl) Homan, Cassi Radcliffe and Lydia (Jared) Nipple; and great-grandchild, Wren Homan. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Carla Ann Edge; parents, Stephen and Anna Metz; and brother, Dale Metz.

A celebration of life will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Wednesday, November 11, 2026, with a graveside service immediately following. To honor Shirley, family invites attendees to wear their favorite Chicago Cubs and Bears apparel.

The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the Homestead Care Group and Agrace HospiceCare for the kindness, compassion, and loving care they provided to Shirley.
