Obituary
MADISON - Laurel Jean Jopke, born September 15, 1964, in Madison, WI, passed away peacefully on October 26, 2026, after a brief illness at the University of Wisconsin Hospital. She was the cherished first-born daughter of Peter and Mary (Haines) Berthold.
A proud 1982 graduate of Lodi High School, Laurel carried her love of learning throughout her life. She built a dedicated career at WPS, where her reliability and work ethic were deeply appreciated, retiring in 2022.
Laurel married the love of her life, David Jopke, on August 28, 1994, after meeting at WPS. Together, they shared a life grounded in love, faith, and community. As an active member of the Madison Seventh-day Adventist Church, Laurel volunteered generously, treasured daily Bible study, and delighted in helping children with Sabbath School. The annual camp meeting was the highlight of her year.
Laurel’s joy for life was evident in all she did—roller skating, train watching, traveling with David, cardmaking, reading, cheering on local baseball teams, and enjoying meals with friends. Her beloved cat, Zorro, was her constant companion. Known for her warm smile, kind heart, and unwavering grace, Laurel brought light to everyone around her.
She is survived by her sister, Rachel Telder of Higgins Lake, MI; nephew, Zachary Telder of Troy, MI; and niece, Madison Telder of Lansing, MI; along with many dear friends and her church family. She was preceded in death by her husband, David; and her parents.
We honor Laurel’s life with gratitude for the love, strength, faith, and hope she shared so freely. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
A Celebration of Life will be held at MADISON EAST SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTIST CHURCH, 910 Femrite Drive, Monona, WI, at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 22, 2026, with Pastor Tim Kwon presiding. A luncheon will follow, and all are welcome. Visitation will be held at the church beginning at 12 noon.
