Obituary
MADISON - Kathleen A. Granberg, a devoted mother, grandmother, educator, and lifelong learner, passed away on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. She is now at peace, leaving behind a lifetime of memories shared with family, friends, and the many students whose lives she touched as their teacher.
Kathleen was born on January 20, 1949, in Rockford, Ill., to Edward and Anne Burns. From an early age, she developed an appreciation for history and the importance of education. These interests would eventually guide her toward a profession in helping others learn.
After earning a master’s degree in education from Western Illinois University, Kathleen spent her career teaching in the Galesburg and Monmouth School Districts. In the later part of her career, she focused on special education, where she developed individualized approaches to meet the needs of her students. She understood that every student possessed different abilities and opportunities for growth. With creativity and commitment, she made a meaningful difference in the lives of the children she taught.
Outside the classroom, Kathleen maintained a lifelong interest in American history. She especially enjoyed reading and learning about the experiences of early settlers, including the migration of Irish families to America. Her appreciation for history extended to collecting antiques and objects associated with early twentieth-century Americana.
Animals also held a special place in Kathleen's heart. Over the years, she raised and cared for more than eight boxer dogs, each one a beloved companion and character in her life. The boxers were a source of joy and comfort for more than 50 years.
Following retirement, Kathleen enjoyed quiet pursuits like crocheting, crafting, and visiting with friends known for many decades. Lasting connections like these brought a warm sense of community to her life.
Kathleen is survived by her two sons, Christopher Granberg and his wife, Barb Benesch-Granberg, and Jason Granberg and his partner, Erika Zar; and her grandchildren, Ben Granberg and Henry Granberg. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Anne Burns; her brother, Thomas Edward Burns; and her niece, Amy Burns-Moore.
Kathleen will be remembered for her commitment to education, her appreciation of history, her love of animals, and her lifelong relationships with family and friends. Her years as a teacher leave a lasting contribution through the students she encouraged and supported, while those closest to her will remember the many moments that made Kathy, Mom, and Grandma her unique, one-of-a-kind self. May she rest peacefully, remembered with love and affection.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in Kathleen's memory to the Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation or the BrightFocus Foundation's Alzheimer's Disease Research program. These organizations support scientific research dedicated to understanding, preventing, treating, and ultimately finding cures for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. Through these contributions, Kathleen's memory may help advance medical research and provide hope for future generations.
