Obituary
Connie Rae Floan (née Bodding), age 82, of Stillwater, Minn., passed away peacefully on the morning of Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at Pillars Hospice Home in Oakdale, Minn.
Connie was born on June 9, 1944, in Warren, Minn., the daughter of Arthur and Bernice (Borreson) Bodding. She grew up in Ada, Minn., in a home filled with music. She learned to play piano on the Steinway her parents bought for her as a child, beginning a lifelong love of music. She went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., in 1966, where she studied Latin education.
Connie began her career as a teacher and continued to teach throughout her life. She gave piano lessons to students in every community her family called home, and she stepped into classrooms as a substitute teacher whenever she was needed. At home, she brought the same care to her own children’s schoolwork, and she was always thorough and patient when they asked for help with their homework.
Connie met Hans Floan when his college choir was on tour, and the two were married on July 9, 1967, at Grace Lutheran Church in Ada. As the wife of the Rev. Hans Floan, a Lutheran pastor, she raised their family in the communities where he was called to serve: Pembina, N.D.; New Folden and Fosston, Minn.; Hawkeye and Hesper/Burr Oak, Iowa; and finally. Perry Lutheran Church near Mount Horeb, Wis., where Hans served until his retirement. In each of those congregations, Connie shared her musical gifts, accompanying the adult and youth choirs from time to time.
In her later years, after Hans’s passing, Connie found great joy in sewing quilts and other creative projects with her sewing group in Mount Horeb, and she often traveled with the group on sewing trips. She also played bass clarinet with the Oregon Community Band, and she loved to travel, enjoying cruises, trips with her granddaughter Disa, and visits to Arizona. She was also a proud and devoted supporter of St. Croix Valley Opera, the company founded by her son, Obed ,and his wife, Megan, and a founding member of its Sustainers Circle. In her final years, she made her home with Obed and Megan in Stillwater.
Above all, Connie was a loving mother to Erik, Ingrid, Einar, and Obed, and a proud grandmother and great-grandmother.
Connie is survived by her children, Ingrid (Michael) Erickson of Blue Mounds, Wis., Einar (Amy) Floan of Evansville, Wis., and Obed (Dr. Megan Wagner) Floan of Stillwater, Minn.; her grandchildren, Disa (Andrew) McKeighan of Des Moines, Iowa, Oscar Floan, and Kajsa Floan; and her great-granddaughters, Vivienne McKeighan and Marceline McKeighan.
She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Hans Floan; her son, Erik Floan; her sister, Cheryl Stensvad; and her parents, Arthur and Bernice Bodding.
A graveside burial service for family, friends, and Connie’s sewing group will be held at Mount Horeb Union Cemetery in Mount Horeb, Wis., where her husband, Hans, and son, Erik, rest side by side. The Rev. Jeffrey Jacobs will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, in honor of Connie’s love of music, memorials may be made to St. Croix Valley Opera, where she was a founding member of the Sustainers Circle, at scvopera.org, or to Evansville Underground Music at evansvilleundergroundmusic.org/donate.
