Obituary
MADISON - Marlene Finger, age 78, passed away unexpectedly at UW Hospital on Saturday, October 17, 2026. Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Daughter, and Friend, she left behind a loving family and many friends who will miss her warmth, laughter, and wonderful sense of humor.
She was born on June 16, 1948 to Marion Joseph Thayer and Maryann Jane (Reuschlein) Thayer, and she was a lifelong Wisconsin resident. She graduated from La Follette High School in 1966 and later attended the University of Wisconsin - Platteville. Throughout her career, Marlene dedicated herself to public service through her work at the City of Madison Mayor's office as a secretary, and her long tenure with the Dane County Department of Health and Human Services. In addition to her great work ethic, she also enjoyed volunteering at her children's and grandchildren's schools. She also worked with disabled children, doing arts and crafts, and working to enhance their lives.
Marlene was a true social butterfly who had a special gift for making friends wherever she went. Her happy spirit, infectious sense of humor, and ability to bring laughter and joy to those around her made her beloved by so many. She treasured spending time with family and friends and enjoyed playing cards, bowling, slot machines, and celebrating Halloween with enthusiasm in her many costumes.
Marlene especially cherished her frequent visits to Dan and Heidi's home in Arizona. She always enjoyed playing cards or watching a movie with them. She felt at home and loved taking part in the many activities with her grandchildren there. She was a fun and involved grandmother, always willing to play a board game with Bill and his children. She also regularly attended her great-grandson's activities and playing ball in the yard with her great-granddaughter.
Marlene shared an especially close bond with her baby sister, Laura, who was much more than a sister to her. She was like a daughter and best friend. Their one-of-a-kind relationship brought much love and companionship to Marlene's life. Their closeness was evident to all through their many conversations each day. Marlene also shared a cherished lifelong relationship with her best childhood friend, Barb Hazard, along with her husband Charlie, and a deep and lasting love with her longtime partner, Jack, who held a special place in her heart as the love of her life.
Affectionately known as GMA Marlene, she had a generous heart and was always willing to help someone in need. She regularly supported St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
Above all, Marlene leaves behind a legacy of laughter, kindness, friendship, and love. She had a wonderful way of making people feel welcome and bringing joy to everyday moments to everyone around her with her loving and kind approach to life. The memories she created and the happiness she shared will live on in the hearts of all those fortunate enough to have known and loved her.
Marlene is survived by her sons, Dan (Heidi) Finger and William Ninedorf; grandchildren Carson, Veronica, Mallory, Jake, Nicole, Mitchell and Sarah; great-grandchildren, Cordale and Peyton; siblings, Laura Hermanson, Debbie (Dan) Furniss, Tammy Thayer, David Thayer, Mary Liddicoat and Mick Thayer, along with many nieces and nephews.
