Obituary

MOUNT HOREB - Randall R. “Randy” Hagen, age 66, of Mount Horeb, Wis., passed away on October 8, 2026, from acute myeloid leukemia, leaving behind a lifetime of memories, a family who adored him, and a garden no one will ever quite tend the way he did.

A lifelong Mount Horeb resident, Randy grew up in the community he called home and graduated from Mount Horeb High School. He spent his working years in the grocery business, including 28 years as the produce manager at Kalscheurs Fine Foods in Mount Horeb, along with time at other local grocery stores, before retiring in 2023. All three of his children got their start working alongside him at the grocery store, where he instilled in them a strong work ethic, sense of responsibility, and the importance of taking pride in a job well done. Those lessons helped shape the people they’ve become today.

Randy was happiest outdoors, whether he was hunting, fishing, tending to his garden, or simply enjoying the fresh air. He especially treasured hunting trips to Colorado with his son, Jimmy, and brother, Ron, and fishing adventures in Florida and northern Wisconsin with his brother-in-law, Cory. Of course, the best parts of those trips weren't always about what they caught or brought home, but the time spent playing poker, sitting around the campfire, sharing stories, and listening to “the classics” which, according to Randy, meant “the '70s.”

Randy took great pride in his gardens which were no small undertakings. His annual crop of “Grandpa's pumpkins” became a beloved tradition, bringing joy to his grandchildren. Another favorite tradition was picking fresh strawberries with his son, Michael, followed, of course, by homemade strawberry shortcake and a lengthy discussion about the weather. He also enjoyed tending to the chickens daily at his daughter, Maureen's farm, where he could always find something that needed doing — or at least something he thought needed doing. Whether he was out in the woods, digging in the garden, enjoying the farm, or gathered around a campfire, Randy appreciated life's simple pleasures, especially when shared with the people he loved.

But as much as Randy loved the outdoors, nothing brought him more joy than his family, especially his three grandchildren, Brynlee, Anders, and Isabelle (“Izzy”). Being Grandpa was one of his greatest joys, and he was always happiest when they were by his side. Whether it was spending hours coloring together, or laughing at old cartoons and funny videos, Randy was never too busy to enjoy time with his grandkids. He also loved having his little helpers alongside him for chicken chores, working in the garden, and picking out the perfect pumpkins. Of course, Grandpa had his own ideas about quality entertainment, which often meant introducing them to his favorite elk hunting and fishing videos. He loved being part of their lives, celebrating their accomplishments, sharing his interests, and simply being together. To Randy, no hunting trip or big catch could ever compare to the joy of being Grandpa. Those everyday moments, filled with laughter, love, and a little bit of mischief, are the memories his family will treasure forever.

At the heart of Randy's life was his wife and the love of his life, Diane (Farrell) Hagen. Married for 42 wonderful years, the two built a beautiful life together filled with love, laughter, family, and countless memories. Over the years, they shared many travel adventures, including a special bucket-list trip to Alaska in July 2026. It was one more unforgettable experience in a lifetime of adventures together.

Randy is survived by his wife, Diane; his children, Michael (Coe) Hagen, Jimmy (Ashley) Hagen, and Maureen Hagen; and his beloved grandchildren, Brynlee Hagen, Anders Hagen, and Isabelle (Izzy) Hagen.

He is further survived by his mother, Carol Jean Hagen; his siblings, Ronald (Pam) Hagen, Debra (Joseph) Hackl, Richard Hagen (Michelle Plescia), and Kevin (Suzie) Hagen; and his brothers- and sisters-in-law, Keith (Angie) Farrell, Richard (Gail) Farrell, Brian Farrell, Patricia (James) Binger, Kathleen (Cory) Painter, and John (Tammy) Farrell; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Anthony and Loretta Krantz and Hans and Julia Hagen; his father, Robert Hagen; his sister, Laura Sunby; his nephew, Jason Sunby; his great-niece, Harmoni Burzynski; and his parents-in-law, Jack and Ruth Farrell.

Randy will be remembered for his love of the outdoors, his dedication to his family, and the simple joys that made life meaningful. Whether he was tending to his gardens, heading out hunting, checking on the chickens, or spending an afternoon with his grandkids, Randy knew that some of life's greatest moments were the ones spent doing what you love with the people you love.

His family will miss him more than words can say, but they'll think of him every time the garden starts growing, the pumpkins turn orange, or a good hunting story gets told. And somewhere, we're pretty sure Randy is watching over his favorite hunting spots, reminding everyone to get out on their stands early, stay a little longer, and never miss an opportunity.

Randy's family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Amy Grelle, the UW Health University Hospital Hematology Oncology inpatient unit, and the Agrace Hospice inpatient team for their exceptional care, kindness, and compassion throughout his journey. Your dedication, support, and the comfort you provided to Randy and his family during such a difficult time will never be forgotten.
