MOUNT HOREB – Dr. Warren D. Wilson, age 82, of Mount Horeb, Wis. passed away on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at Agrace Hospice Care, after living with cancer for the past three years.
He was born on May 16, 1944, in Crookston, Minn., to parents, Woodrow and Harriet (Vinge) Wilson. Warren graduated from Lafayette High School in Red Lake Falls, Minn., in 1962. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Science in 1967 and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree in 1969. Warren married E. Arlene Wikelius on September 9, 1967, at Chisago Lake Lutheran Church in Center City, Minn. They welcomed four daughters during their 33 years of marriage, which ended with Arlene’s passing. In his continual quest for excellence, he became a Diplomate of the American College of Theriogenologists in 1983 and was a lifelong learner. Afterwards, he completed his Master of Science (Veterinary Clinical Science) from Iowa State University in August 1999. His entire career spanned 45 years working in the veterinary profession, and he felt like he never worked a day in his life.
He started out as an associate veterinarian in Mineral Point, Wis. and Waconia, Minn. His passion was to own his own practice. In 1972, he purchased a solo veterinary practice in Plain, Wis., and began the River Valley Veterinary Clinic, S.C., which grew to a practice of nine veterinarians. Warren had a strong desire to mentor and educate young veterinarians. He accomplished this by having their clinic become a charter practice, partnered with the University of Wisconsin-Madison Veterinary School, which provided real-world educational experience in production medicine. During this time, he was a swine consultant for Pig Improvement Co. (PIC) and was actively involved in dairy and swine production.
In August 1994, Warren had the opportunity to work as a technical service veterinarian for Miles Animal Health (now Bayer). In his 20 years, he specialized in swine production throughout the US. Through various company consolidations, he worked for Miles, Bayer, Intervet, Intervet/Schering-Plough and Merck Animal Health, from which he retired on October 31, 2014. During these years, Warren married Marilyn (Wikelius) Coil on May 20, 2002, at Kula Botanical Garden in Kula, Maui, Hawaii. They enjoyed 24 years together, sharing family time and many travels.
Over the years, Dr. Wilson received numerous awards and recognition dating back to his days as a student, when he was awarded the 1969 Ned E. Olson Memorial Award, given to a senior student by the University of Minnesota for being most likely to succeed in general practice. In 2011, he was honored to receive the American Association of Swine Veterinarians (AASV) Meritorious Service Award for exemplary service, commitment and leadership. He was a proud AASV member since 1972, and was the president of the AASV Foundation for several years. He was dedicated to building a future for swine veterinarians. He also received several awards from Merck Animal Health: the 2011 Circle of Excellence Award for outstanding service and the Retirement award in January 2015, in recognition of his 20 years of service and dedication. He was always well respected by everyone who knew and worked with him: a true man of integrity, living out his Christian values in his daily life.
Aside from the time he devoted to his career, Warren enjoyed daily Bible devotions, golfing, biking, swimming, grilling out, reading, walking and taking care of God’s creation—the woods on his property. He loved spending time with his goldendoodle companion, Molly, but especially treasured time spent with family and friends and always welcomed opportunities to attend his grandchildren’s activities. Warren was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church of Mount Horeb in Mount Horeb, Wis.
Warren is survived by his wife, Marilyn; daughters, Brenda (John) Martin, Karen (Steve) Skarda, Sarah (Micah) Wyss and Barbara Wilson; sons, Jason (Tina) Coil and Jeffrey (Amanda) Coil; grandchildren, Ty (Natalie) Albrecht, Eric, Nathan and Lauren Albrecht; Sam and Colton Martin; Samantha (Joseph) O’Neill; Jonah and Kate Skarda; Caleb and Isaac Wyss; Aiden, Maiah and Jilene Coil; and Dylan, Simon and TJ Coil; siblings, Darlene Mickelson, Fr. Richard Wilson, Scott Wilson, Kathleen Schultz, and Renae (Steve) Philipp; two brothers-in-law, Mark (Barbara) Wikelius and Perry Duden; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Arlene Wilson; parents; sisters, Janice Bolstad and Laurie Duden; brother, Byron Wilson; brothers-in-law, Mark Henderson, Jerry Schultz and Timothy Pahlen; son-in-law, Jeremy Albrecht; and nephew, Brian Wilson.
A memorial service will be held at EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH OF MOUNT HOREB, 315 E. Main St., Mount Horeb, at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 30, 2026, with Interim Pastor Karen Hofstad presiding. The service will be livestreamed on the church’s Facebook page and YouTube channel. Visitation will be held at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the service Friday. Burial will be held at Spring Green Cemetery the following day at 10 a.m.
