Obituary

MADISON - Philip A. Paul, “PP”, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, September 28, 2026. He was born on August 16, 1942, in Rio, Wisconsin, to Arnold and Eleanor Paul.

At 17, Philip enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. After the military, he obtained his GED and eventually began a career as a Skilled Mechanic at Oscar Mayer. After retiring from Oscar Mayer, he continued working for the Madison Water Utility before retiring for good at age 72.

Philip married Betty on February 14, 1964, and together they raised their three children, Rod, Cindy, and Debbie, during 48 years of marriage. In Betty's final years, Philip cared for her at home, embodying the kind of selfless love that defined so much of his life. Betty passed away in 2012.

Philip seemed to know someone everywhere he went. He made many good friends throughout his years at Oscar Mayer and the Madison Water Utility. He gave freely of his time and found joy in being part of the lives of those around him. He coached East Madison Little League, brought Christmas trees to his children’s classrooms, and, in the weeks leading up to Christmas, enjoyed running around the home of his grandchildren pretending to be the elves visiting them.

Some of Philip’s favorite memories were made on the road with his family. As his children grew up, they traveled across the country and camped in numerous states, creating memories that his children still reminisce about today. He loved hunting, a passion he shared with his son from the time Rod was a little boy, and continued making memories hunting with Rod and his wife for as long as he could.

Philip found love again with Jeanie Quelle, whom he met at Menard’s. After dating for a few years, they married on October 3, 2018, in Door County. Jeanie and her family welcomed him with open arms, filling his later years with love and companionship.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanie; son, Rod (Michelle) Paul; daughter, Cindy (George) Rasmussen; son-in-law, Jose Huichan; grandchildren, Reanna (Benjamin), Kaden, and Mari Rasmussen; stepchildren, Mark and Mary Quelle, and Melanie Pinkston; and brothers, Dale and Dave Paul. He was preceded in death by Betty; daughter, Debbie Huichan; his parents; and siblings, Dolores, Alice, and Richard.

A funeral service will be held at MESSIAH LUTHERAN CHURCH, 5202 Cottage Grove Road, Madison, at 11 a.m. Friday, October 9, 2026. Visitation will be at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 8, 2026, and at the church from 10 a.m. until the service on Friday. A luncheon will follow the service at the church. A private burial will follow at Burke Lutheran Cemetery.

The family thanks the friends, caregivers, and loved ones who offered kindness and support.
