Obituary

Unke, Donalyn Ray Donalyn Ray Unke, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2015. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marguerite and Raymond Unke. He is survived by his wife, Joyce; children, Barry (Jennifer), Brett (Joyce Jr), Kellie (Mike) and Kristina (Ron); grandchildren, Daunte, Jeremiah (Shannon), Jennifer (Andre) and Kaitlyndh (Steve); sisters, Carol (Elgin), JoAnn (John); and many nieces and nephews. Don was born in Arlington on the family farm Aug. 17, 1932. He was baptized at the Arlington Methodist Church where he and his family were active members for many years. Don attended elementary school in a one room school house on the Arlington prairie and graduated from the Lodi High School in 1950. After high school, he remained on the family farm working with his father and extended family. Don met his wife when she accompanied his sister, Carol home from college. They were wed in Bensenville, Ill., in 1958. Leaving the farm in 1969, Don began a successful venture into the restaurant business in downtown Lodi. For many years the "Downtown Cafe" was a well-established venue for good food, community gatherings and all the local information not fit for print. He later owned and operated the Hardware Hank store in downtown Lodi, followed by a sales career in agriculture machinery and seed corn. In his later years, Don enjoyed driving trucks for Lodi "Idol" Canning Company and driving school bus and interacting with the children of his community. His greatest enjoyment was to transport the sports teams from Lodi High School all over the state. Don was a member of the Lodi Volunteer Fire Department, Rotary, chartered the AFS program in Lodi, City boards and eagerly supported the Lodi Ag Fair (including mowing the grounds). Don and his family became active members of the United Methodist Church where he shared his love for music. You could hear his beautiful tenor voice in the church choir, barbershop quartets and the shower. His love of music also extended to instrumental contributions. Don enjoyed playing Cornet with the "Soon To Be Famous Lodi Band" as one of the traveling Lodi minstrels entertaining Southern Wisconsin, playing from their converted hay wagon at festivals and in parades. More than anything, Don loved his wife, children, grandchildren and extended family and friends. He was never far from his beloved community, he loved his hometown, Lodi. Don was often called the "Mayor" by his children's friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in Don's name to the Lodi EMS, Lodi United Methodist Church, The Lodi Ag Fair or REACH OUT LODI Center. There will be a celebration of Don's life with Fellowship on Monday, Aug. 24, 2015, from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. at LODI UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 130 Locust St., Lodi, with a service at 6 p.m. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com. I still remember when we were going to Key West a few years ago when we saw Don & Joyce at the Milwaukee airport. They were also going to Key West - on the same flights! We had arrived to the airport very early and had a ton of time to kill before the first flight left. Joyce was pleased to have Mike chat with Don the whole time before the flight, because Don hated flying. Don, you will be greatly missed! We we do what we can here on earth to take care of Joyce until it's her time to join you in heaven. Roxy

Our family would like to thank the Lodi EMS for their very special care of dad over the past 4-5 years. Dad has had several falls & the EMS staff always took such great care of him! Mom talks about you all often! And to the Med Flight staff that cared for him this past Monday (his 83rd Birthday) as they flew him from Lodi to the UW hospital. We know a helicopter ride was not what you wanted for your birthday dad, but at least you had a great view of the corn fields on your way! hugs - k

My family has know the Unke's since moving to Lodi in the early '60s!! Best memory of Don that I have would encompass all the time our softball team was sponsored by his Hardware Hank store!! Wish I still had that shirt... Thanks 'Hank', for the great example of how to live life to the fullest, laughing often and loving deeply. You will truly be missed down here. God Speed

My family got to know Don and Joyce better while we lived near them on the little alley. I remember Don working tirelessly in that huge garden. Always a smile and kind word for the kids. Our thoughts go out to the family.

Our family would like to let everyone know how things happened this past Monday. Dad fell at home & the severe head trauma caused the EMT crew to have him Med Flighted from the Middle school parking lot across the street from their condo. This ironically was also dad's 83rd birthday. We agreed to let nature takes its course, We surrounded his bed & sang happy birthday to him. We are also blessed that my step daughter Jennifer was working the Trauma floor & helped our family get through the evening. We removed his breathing tube Tuesday afternoon after Brett's arrival from Key West. We prayed around his bed, told stories, said our goodbyes. Approx. 7:45 pm with Brett by his side he peacefully took his last breath. Although we are incredibly saddened by his passing, we are also feeling blessed that he is finally at peace.

Well my friend, all seasons must past. I'm saddened by your passing but know that any suffering is now gone. I think back of all the years of Friday night fish dinners we put away, all the conversation that happened, and maybe even a cold toddy or two. May the sun shine upon your face and the wind be at your back for your final destination.
